On June 10, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had received and treated a patient with severe duodenal ulcer.
The patient is NVA (19 years old) admitted to the hospital with severe vomiting. 6 months before, the patient often had nausea and vomited old food, lost 12kg. Diagnosis was pyloric stenosis due to duodenal ulcer.
According to the family, the patient has a history of phone addiction, playing games for the past 6 years, irregular eating, and often staying up late.
"There was a time when I called at 3am and still saw my child hugging the computer. Because I had to work far away, I couldn't keep up with him often. The family didn't have much time to talk and share, so he gradually became withdrawn and spoke less.
I never expected that bad habits would seriously affect my child's health. There were times when I was afraid that my child would be autistic because he stayed in his room all day and didn't interact with anyone. Luckily, the doctor later said that it was because my child lacked connection, not a mental problem," said a family member.
Doctor Le Tien Dung - Department of Gastroenterology, Thong Nhat Hospital - said the patient had no underlying medical conditions.
However, patients with severe malnutrition, addiction to phones or playing games, staying up late, and irregular eating habits lead to severe duodenal ulcers.
The patient underwent gastrojejunostomy (connecting the small intestine to the stomach instead of through the pylorus, which had become scarred and hardened as before) to create a new path for food to pass through.
After surgery, the patient is fed early to recover as soon as possible. However, the weight index is still low, so nutritional monitoring is continued to restore weight.
Two weeks after surgery, the patient recovered, could eat, no longer vomited, and gained weight.
How to prevent stomach diseases?
According to statistics in 2024, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) received 12 cases of stomach perforation for patients aged 18-25. This is very worrying, because at this age, the stomach usually functions very well.
Dr. Ho Huu Duc - head of the digestive surgery department at Thong Nhat Hospital - said that playing games also leads to more complicated psychological developments, thereby increasing the risk of stomach problems.
Staying up late, fasting or being addicted to the phone can easily cause more severe stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, and the risk of cancer.
When stressed, eating irregularly, eating fast food with lots of fat and little nutrition, staying up late will increase harmful factors and reduce protective factors for the stomach. This imbalance will become a disease.
To prevent stomach diseases, doctors recommend a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet, reducing time spent in front of computer and phone screens, and participating in physical activities.
