The health of many people is seriously threatened by subjective consumer habits. Many people buy and use fake spices, seasoning powders, and MSG of unknown origin simply because "everyone in the family uses them, no one gets sick", or easily trust recommendations from acquaintances and neighbors. This gullibility causes them to ignore all warnings and continue to put into their daily meals products that are full of health risks - from liver and kidney damage to the risk of long-term accumulation of harmful toxins.
More dangerously, fake spices have quietly crept into collective kitchens, cheap restaurants, school canteens, etc. thanks to their low prices, no need for invoices, and ease of purchase and sale. This has caused thousands of diners - including children, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases - to face health risks without even knowing it. Not only a hygiene issue, fake spices are a "silent killer" to health.
Doctor Nguyen Thu Ha, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital said that using fake spices for a long time can cause a series of serious consequences, from acute to chronic.
Users need to be careful when choosing spices for daily use.

The risk of fake seasoning powder and MSG
Fake spices are often mixed with ingredients of unknown origin, including industrial additives, dyes, synthetic flavors and even heavy metals. These substances can cause symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and more seriously, can lead to convulsions or coma if the toxicity exceeds the threshold.
Long-term effects on liver and kidneys
The liver and kidneys are the two main organs that filter toxins in the body, and can be seriously damaged by having to deal with the amount of toxic chemicals that accumulate over time. As a result, there is a high risk of diseases such as liver failure, kidney failure, and even liver or kidney cancer.
Increased risk of chronic disease
Heart disease: Many fake condiments contain high levels of sodium or trans fats, which can lead to high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.
Metabolic disorders: Spices containing artificial sweeteners and industrial sugar can lead to diabetes and obesity.
Cancer: Some additives and industrial dyes can cause cell mutations, increasing the risk of cancer.
"The harmful effects of fake spices do not manifest immediately but silently accumulate and destroy the liver, heart, and digestive system over time. Children, the elderly, and people with underlying diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, etc. are especially vulnerable when exposed to poor quality products," Dr. Ha emphasized.

How to choose safe spices?
Doctor Ha said that to avoid falling into the "trap" of fake spices, consumers need to equip themselves with knowledge and proactively identify products right from the selection stage.
Don’t be greedy for cheap prices: Products that are priced too low compared to the general market level often have the potential risk of poor quality. Consumers should avoid buying spices that are sold on the fly, especially on online groups. Prioritize buying at large supermarkets, genuine stores or reputable distributors.
Check the label carefully: Genuine products must have complete information: Product name, manufacturer, ingredients, expiry date. Standard packaging has flat, even, and non-bubbled bag seals. The production date and expiry date are clearly printed on the bottom. On the contrary, counterfeit products often have distorted, bubbly seals, blurred ink, and unclear or missing information.
Observe the shape of the spice grains - how to distinguish real from fake
Spice type | Real | Fake |
MSG | Seeds are clear, even, slightly long, and diamond-shaped. | Short, broken, opaque grain, may contain impurities. |
Seasoning powder | Fine, uniform, lump-free powder. | Coarse powder, strange smell, uneven fineness, easy to clump. |
Seasoning | Dry, even seeds, natural aroma. | Seeds are moist, lumpy, have a pungent or chemical odor.

" Currently, fake spice products are very sophisticated, deceiving both the sight and smell of consumers. The above tips are for reference only, helping to limit risks but do not guarantee complete detection. When seeing a product with unusual color, smell, or poor packaging, consumers should stop using it immediately to avoid affecting the health of their family ," Dr. Ha advised.
