Types of hair dyes
Hair dyes contain a variety of ingredients, depending on the type of dye. There are three main types of dyes, including:
Temporary hair dye.
Semi permanent hair dye.
Permanent hair dye.
Can hair dye cause allergic reactions?
Many people use hair dye without any problems. But some people experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to the dye.
Ingredients in hair dyes, such as ammonia, sulfates, parabens, fragrances, and formaldehyde, can irritate the skin, says Jody A. Levine, MD, a dermatologist in New York City.
Can hair dye cause cancer?
The cancer risk from hair dye is still unclear, said Dr. Daniel Landau, an oncologist at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Concerns about hair dye causing cancer relate to semi-permanent dyes and permanent dyes, especially darker dyes, which have more chemicals than other types.
Is it safe for pregnant women to dye their hair?
According to the American Academy of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, there is no evidence to date that hair dye affects fertility or pregnancy.
However, according to Dr. Robert Roman, clinical associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Santa Monica, California, some chemicals found in hair care products can cause endocrine disruption, leading to infertility and problems during pregnancy.
