Actively implement English familiarization program for preschool children

Preschool education is an important level of education, laying the foundation for children's physical, cognitive, emotional and aesthetic development to study well in the next levels. In preschooleducation (PED), in addition to organizing educational activities for children according to the new PED program, PED facilities in Can Tho City also organize for preschool children to get acquainted with English, in order to meet the needs and create interest for children in learning.

During an English lesson for children at Thanh Loc 3 Kindergarten (Vinh Thanh District), the teacher spends 5 minutes for the children to warm up with cheerful English songs; then the children watch animated videos with vivid colors and sounds to listen, read or sing along for about 15 minutes. The teacher ends the lesson by reviewing the lesson for the children through songs, developing the curriculum... Only about 30 minutes of activities help preschool children get acquainted with English, bringing positive effects. Little Bui Thao Nhi, a student in the Choi class, Thanh Loc 3 Kindergarten, happily said: "Learning English is fun, I get to play games, dance, and sing with my friends". Little Vo Phuong Thuat, a student in the La class, Thanh Loc 3 Kindergarten, continued: "I know many English words, especially about objects".

In the 2022-2023 school year, Thanh Loc 3 Kindergarten has 165 children/6 class groups; of which 30 children (from 3 to 5 years old) participate in the English-familiarization preschool program, organized by the school in collaboration with Yen Ngoc English Center since the beginning of 2023. Each week, children are introduced to English through 2 activities, each activity lasting about 25-35 minutes. The materials used to implement the My Little Fun program were reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) under Decision No. 2272/QD-BGDDT. According to the school's Board of Directors, in order to organize the class, the school propagates and has consensus on the voluntary spirit of parents. The school must ensure minimum facilities standards according to regulations, arrange a room for children to get acquainted with English like a class in the physical education room, equipped with audio-visual equipment (1 TV, laptop, bluetooth speaker) to serve children.

Similarly, Thanh Loc 2 Kindergarten has 241 children in 21 classes; of which 40 children participate in the program for preschoolers to get acquainted with English. Ms. Ong Kim Nga, the school's principal, said that after more than 4 months of implementation, the program has brought positive signals. The children's activities are sent by teachers to parents via zalo groups. Parents know and coordinate with the school in educating their children. Not only studying in class and at school, children also study and play at home, limiting their use of phones. Ms. Duong Thi Ngoc Du, mother of Minh Chau, a student in the La class of Thanh Loc 2 Kindergarten, shared: "At home, the child is flexible, cheerful, and knows some simple English words such as colors, animals, fruits, etc. The school organizes these classes to help children get acquainted for the following classes."

According to Mr. Le Thanh Huan, Director of Yen Ngoc English Center, the center has 3 facilities in Thoi Lai, Co Do and O Mon. Currently, the center is coordinating with the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Thanh, Co Do, Thoi Lai and Thot Not districts to organize for children to get acquainted with the English program at 28 preschools. Mr. Le Thanh Huan said: "Language becoming a part of children's perception must follow a natural sequence such as observation, feeling, listening, speaking, and developing reading and writing skills. The center adheres to this rule. The team of teachers in charge of the class has a bachelor's degree in foreign languages, a certificate in preschool education, and must understand children's psychology and love children." During the teaching process, teachers bring technology into the preschool education program by bringing each student a tablet; especially in the suburbs so that children can access English in the best way. The lessons are not simply about getting acquainted with English, but also have many integrated activities, helping children both play and learn.

Currently, Vinh Thanh district has 9/17 preschools, with more than 300 children studying the program for preschoolers to get acquainted with English. Ms. Mai Thi Ho Chuc, in charge of preschool education in Vinh Thanh district, said: After more than 4 months of implementing the program, children have made clear progress, are bolder, more confident and can listen and pronounce some English words. In the coming time, the district education sector will continue to direct schools to promote this program to parents, along with investing resources in schools. Strive for 100% of schools to organize this program in the 2023-2024 school year.

Pursuant to Circular No. 50/2020/TT-BGDDT of the Minister of Education and Training promulgating the program to familiarize preschool children with English, in the 2022-2023 school year, the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City issued Official Dispatch No. 3090/SGDĐT-GDMN on guidelines for implementing the organization of preschool children to become familiar with English. Up to now, 62/171 preschool education facilities are qualified to organize preschool children to become familiar with English, reaching 36.26%. The total number of preschool classes to become familiar with English is 225; 5,428/39,784 preschool children are familiar with English, reaching 13.64%.

Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City, assessed: The implementation of the program to familiarize preschool children with English at preschools in the city has achieved good results. Preschool education facilities have also responded and implemented the regulations, contributing to improving the Project on Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages ​​in the National Education System in Can Tho City for the period 2021-2025. In this Project, the city sets a target of striving to achieve 40% of preschool children being familiar with English by 2025. Therefore, in the coming time, the sector will focus on directing the Department of Education and Training of districts to support and create conditions for preschool education facilities to implement the program; at the same time, strengthen inspection and supervision, mainly supporting preschool education facilities to effectively implement the program in accordance with regulations.
