Striker Van Toan says goodbye to AFF Cup 2024

(Dan Tri) - The 5-0 victory of the Vietnamese team over Myanmar in the final round of Group B was not complete when striker Nguyen Van Toan was injured and had to leave the AFF Cup 2024.

According to the test results this afternoon (December 22), Van Toan has a knee injury, showing signs of ligament damage. With this type of injury, the player will need 4 weeks to recover, while the 2024 AFF Cup is only two weeks away. Van Toan still travels to Singapore with the entire team for medical care and treatment.

In the match against Myanmar, Van Toan was put on the field for the first time by coach Kim Sang Sik from the start. The enthusiasm of the player currently playing for Nam Dinh Club forced Myanmar defenders to constantly follow closely, even tackling him roughly to block him.

Notably, in the 57th minute, striker Van Toan was tackled brutally by an opposing player. Receiving a pass from Quang Hai in front of the penalty area, Van Toan moved quickly but player number 19 Oakkar Naing fiercely blocked him, forcing him to somersault in the air before falling to the ground.

After this situation, the Vietnamese striker was still able to play, but only about 2 minutes later, he could not continue playing.

Van Toan had to ask for help from the medical team. The Nam Dinh striker burst into tears, clearly showing his pain. He left the field on a stretcher and made way for striker Nguyen Tien Linh.

Also on the morning of December 22, the Vietnamese team had a training session at Viet Tri Stadium to prepare for the first leg semi-final match against Singapore on December 26 away.

The 2024 AFF Cup semi-final between Vietnam and Singapore will take place at Jalan Besar Stadium (Singapore) at 8:00 p.m. on December 26 and the second leg at Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho ) at 8:00 p.m. on December 29.
