Recently, in Khanh Hoa, the annual scientific conference on urology and nephrology was organized by the Vietnam Urology - Nephrology Association, the Ho Chi Minh City Urology - Nephrology Association in collaboration with Khanh Hoa General Hospital, attracting more than 1,500 delegates, along with many leading medical experts in urology and nephrology at home and abroad. Not only reporting on expertise, the conference made a special mark when broadcasting live 7 demonstration surgeries from the operating room to the conference hall. More than 300 doctors attending the program could observe closely; at the same time ask questions, exchange and discuss directly with surgeons right at the conference. This time, specialized techniques, advanced minimally invasive surgical methods in the world and at the central level were deployed for the first time at a provincial hospital such as: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy with a micro-tunnel; endoscopic nephrolithotomy with a flexible endoscope; prostate fibroid removal with laser; kidney-preserving tumor resection in cancer patients; Combined technique of endoscopic and percutaneous lithotripsy. This method not only brings medical knowledge closer to treatment practice, but also provides opportunities for patients to be treated with central techniques right in the province.

Among the 7 surgical demonstrations at the conference, laparoscopic surgery to preserve the kidney in cancer patients is one of the advanced, specialized techniques that has only been applied in recent years in the world . As one of the three main surgeons performing the surgery, Dr. Pham Phu Phat - Head of Department of Urology A, Binh Dan Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) said: “Previously, for these diseases, open surgery had to be performed and the entire kidney had to be removed. Later, laparoscopic surgery was used, but it was only applied to small tumors and early stage cancers. In the past 3 years, surgery for large tumors has been allowed in the world. At this conference, we transferred the technique of laparoscopic surgery to remove tumors and preserve the kidney for a patient with a very large tumor in the left kidney (71 x 51mm, covering almost the entire left kidney). This method helps patients recover quickly, preserves the kidney, and thus reduces the risk of kidney failure in old age. This is a method that requires high skills, many domestic doctors have only heard of it, but have not witnessed it directly.”

In August, Hospital 22-12 coordinated with the Vietnam Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association to organize a scientific workshop on gastrointestinal endoscopy. Within the framework of the workshop, experts performed demonstration surgeries on 1 case of early gastric cancer and 2 cases of early colon cancer, helping delegates directly access modern techniques from the upper level. Similarly, at the scientific workshop "Application of new technology in diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer" held at Ninh Thuan General Hospital, students practiced colon and gastric endoscopy techniques on 5 patients and practiced gastrointestinal endoscopy on a model.

Opportunity to improve skills

The annual scientific conference on urology and nephrology is divided into 54 sessions with more than 300 domestic and foreign scientific reports, updating valuable advances and experiences in diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases, nephrology, robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, urological cancer, kidney transplantation, pediatric urology, andrology, female urology, vascular intervention... At the same time, the conference also organized an in-depth training course on urological tumors taught directly by leading professors from the European Urological Association. Specialist II Doctor Nguyen Thanh Ton - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa General Hospital said: "This is an opportunity for doctors in the province to connect and discuss directly with leading domestic and international experts; at the same time, systematize knowledge, update advanced treatment trends in the country and the world. As one of the young doctors who witnessed the demonstration surgeries right in the operating room, Dr. Hoang Thanh Hai - Department of Urology, Khanh Hoa General Hospital shared: "These conferences not only help young doctors update new knowledge, but also have the opportunity to access advanced and specialized treatment techniques from experts at the top level right in the province. These surgeries also bring direct benefits to patients."

At the scientific conference on digestive endoscopy, more than 100 domestic doctors were updated on the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of early digestive tract cancer from leading experts. At the scientific conference "Application of new technology in the diagnosis and treatment of early digestive tract cancer", more than 320 medical staff from medical facilities in the province had access to in-depth knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract cancer, especially in the field of endoscopy.

From scientific conferences and seminars, many of the most advanced techniques have been brought to the provincial level. Thereby, marking an important step forward in the quality of treatment at provincial medical facilities.
