According to data from Japan Customs, in the first 6 months of 2025, the country imported 191 thousand tons of coffee, with a total value of nearly 1.26 billion USD. Compared to the same period last year, the import volume decreased by 4.3% but the value increased by 48.9%, mainly due to the sharp increase in coffee prices. Vietnam is currently the second largest coffee supplier in Japan, after Brazil. However, Vietnam's market share has decreased from 32.8% in the first half of 2024 to 27.7% in the same period this year.
Specifically, Japan imported 52,900 tons of coffee from Vietnam, down 19% over the same period, although the average price reached 5,772 USD/ton, up 67.5%, much higher than the general increase of the whole market of 55.5%.
According to the Vietnam Industry and Trade Information Center (VITIC), Vietnam's coffee exports peaked in March and have been on a downward trend in the following months, showing that businesses have taken advantage of the high coffee prices to boost sales. By July, coffee export volume had increased by 33.1% and value by 45.8% compared to the same period last year.
In the long term, coffee prices are expected to continue to rise thanks to stable global demand and limited supply. However, factors such as weather fluctuations, monetary policy and exchange rates can still significantly impact market developments.

Arabica coffee prices are under pressure from the progress of the harvest in Brazil. The coffee cooperative Cooxupé reported that as of August 22, 91.3% of its crop had been harvested. This is up from 86.1% last week but still below the 95.4% achieved a year ago.
Analysts say the recent price increase is partly due to a drop in certified inventories on the exchange, as U.S. roasters were forced to look for alternative sources after the U.S. government imposed a 50 percent tariff on coffee imports from Brazil.
Vanusia Nogueira, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), said factors such as US tariffs, the impact of climate change and declining production in Brazil are contributing to the high coffee prices.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event organized by the Colombian Coffee Federation, she also shared that despite the upward trend in coffee prices, the market remains volatile and uncertain due to rising consumption while global reserves are shrinking.
