On the sidelines of the China Development Forum, when asked by the state-run China News Service about DeepSeek, an emerging AI created by a young Chinese startup, the Apple CEO praised it as a "great" model.
Attending this event was part of Tim Cook's first visit to China this year. He also posted photos of his Beijing tour on Weibo on March 22nd.
Apple will hold a developer conference in Shanghai on March 25th, where it is expected to reveal details about Apple Intelligence for Chinese developers.
Cook's visit comes amid declining sales in China for Apple, under increasing pressure from the impact of increased tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
iPhone shipments in China fell by 25% in the fourth quarter due to intense competition from domestic brands such as Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Despite the appeal of the iPhone 16 helping Apple lead the market in the billion-person country in the fourth quarter, overall in 2024, iPhone sales decreased by 17% to 42.9 million units in the country, ranking behind Vivo and Huawei.
Tim Cook visited China at least three times last year to demonstrate his interest in the world's largest smartphone market. In November 2024, attending a supply chain conference in Beijing, Tim Cook emphasized that Apple "couldn't have achieved what it has" without its Chinese partners.
The Cupertino giant plans to launch its Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence model in multiple languages, including simplified Chinese, in April alongside the release of the latest version of iOS.
