Mexican authorities rescued 113 migrants who had been kidnapped and held captive in a house in the city of San Luis Río Colorado, in the state of Sonora, which borders the US state of Texas.
Mexican police also arrested five suspects at the scene in connection with the incident.
After being rescued, the migrants were taken to local medical facilities for health checks. Most were in stable condition and did not have any serious health problems.
The Sonora state prosecutor's office said the discovery of hundreds of abducted migrants occurred by chance while Mexican authorities were searching for another group of 10 Colombian citizens also abducted in San Luis Río, Colorado.
This group of Colombians was subsequently rescued.
These two rescues took place as the policy restricting immigration across the land border between the US and Mexico, also known as Section 42, which was drafted by the US, is set to expire on May 11th.
The end of Section 42 has raised concerns in the U.S. that the flow of migrants seeking to enter the country will surge in the near future.
On May 5th, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that the number of migrants transiting through Mexican territory to reach the United States would not surge after May 11th.
