The Canyon, an impressive reddish-brown building by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, was inaugurated in San Francisco, California, on June 21st .

The 23-story Canyon building is part of an ambitious plan to transform an empty parking lot near San Francisco Bay into a vibrant and sustainable residential area called Mission Rock, providing housing for middle-income earners.

With its unique jagged walls and canyon-like walkways, The Canyon draws inspiration from California's geological features and San Francisco's distinctive hilly terrain.

Strategically located on the northwest corner of the Mission Rock residential area, The Canyon will be a prominent landmark visible to anyone crossing the 3rd Street Bridge. The area will soon be enhanced by the addition of China Basin Park, serving as a cultural hub for the community.

The Canyon comprises a five-story base and a 73-meter-tall building on the west side of the property. The structure features a striking reddish-brown facade and an undulating shape reminiscent of the redstone formations of the American West. A landscaped public "canyon" cuts diagonally across the base of the building, connecting the offices and providing shared amenities for residents, as well as a shortcut from China Basin Park to the residential center.

The canyon's "walls" and the eastern section of the building, with their jagged protrusions and indentations, mimic sheer cliffs. This design element not only adds visual interest but also creates bay windows and small balconies for the 40 apartments, maximizing views of San Francisco Bay. The building's rooftops are transformed into "green havens" with abundant vegetation, providing communal spaces for residents to relax, exercise, and socialize. Meanwhile, the ground floor houses small shops and restaurants.

The Canyon features an efficient heating system discreetly located in the ground floor and basement. Thanks to its proximity to San Francisco Bay, the building utilizes a water exchange system that uses bay water for both cooling and heating, significantly reducing CO2 emissions, water, and energy consumption, thus enhancing sustainability. Residents also benefit from lower energy bills. The basement offers ample bicycle parking, encouraging residents to choose a healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
