In the past, Da Nang stood out with the image of a city of blue sea, white sand, pristine mountains and forests and modern urban life.
Along with the speed of infrastructure and service development, Da Nang in recent years has proactively renewed itself with the direction of culinary tourism, using food as a language to tell stories about culture, lifestyle and the soul of local people.
Cuisine – a new highlight in tourism identity
Being included in the MICHELIN Guide 2025, the world's leading prestigious restaurant rating list, has affirmed the potential and actual quality of Da Nang cuisine. Of the 164 restaurants in the three cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang introduced in this year's publication, there are 25 restaurants in Da Nang.
Including: 17 MICHELIN Selected restaurants (high quality nomination); 6 Bib Gourmand restaurants (delicious dishes at reasonable prices); 2 first MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Da Nang: La Maison 1888 (1 star) and Nen Danang (1 star).
The two MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Da Nang have two different culinary personalities but both converge the core criteria of MICHELIN: quality of ingredients, cooking techniques, chef personality, value for money and stability.
La Maison 1888, located in the luxury resort InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, is a familiar meeting place for high-class international tourists. The restaurant offers a sophisticated menu combining contemporary French cuisine and inspiration from local ingredients.
Meanwhile, Nen Danang is a typical representative of the wave of indigenous creativity. With a tasting menu using traditional ingredients and cooking techniques of the Central region, Nen takes diners on a journey to discover the land and people through each dish.
Spillover effects on city tourism
Before being named in the MICHELIN list, Da Nang had been well prepared for many years. The city not only upgraded its tourism infrastructure, expanded its airport, and improved transportation, but also focused on developing a rich culinary scene: from traditional markets, night food streets, to high-end restaurant chains.
Along with that, many promotional programs such as "Da Nang Culinary Passport", Da Nang International Food Festival, activities connecting raw material regions (from Quang Nam, Hue to the Central Highlands) ... are deployed to diversify tourist experiences.
In addition, the community of chefs and F&B businesses in Da Nang are constantly innovating. They have been connecting with international experts, participating in professional playgrounds, and standardizing operating procedures to reach global standards.
Appearing in the MICHELIN Guide helps Da Nang raise its position on the international tourism map, especially in the middle and high-end segment. Many travel agencies have updated the journey to explore Da Nang cuisine as a separate product, instead of just stopping at "eating to fill up" as before.
Not only does it promote growth in long-stay and high-spending visitors, culinary tourism also contributes to preserving and promoting intangible cultural values.
Seemingly simple dishes such as Quang noodles, rice paper rolls with pork, fish sauce… are being “retold” by young people and young chefs in a new, more attractive way, but still preserving the spirit of the region.
Responding to the press after the announcement ceremony, a representative of the MICHELIN Guide commented: “Da Nang cuisine is not only creative but also reflects a very special local spirit, where tradition and modernity are in harmony.” That is a worthy compliment, but at the same time, it is also a reminder of the responsibility to maintain quality and identity.
In the context of increasingly competitive global tourism, investing in the "soul", such as cuisine, culture, and people, is the strategy that helps Da Nang create sustainable differences.
If this momentum continues, there could be not just two or three, but many more MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Da Nang in the future, making the city a true culinary destination in Asia.
