According to official sources, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, along with a delegation of international experts, has officially arrived in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo. Speaking to the press there, the WHO Director-General affirmed that the international community is working to support the Congolese government in responding to the epidemic. However, the WHO head also emphasized the importance of the actions of the local community, which is why he is present.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, as of May 28th, in less than half a month, Congo had recorded 1,077 suspected cases of Ebola, including 246 deaths. Congo recorded its first suspected case of Ebola in the 17th outbreak in the country on May 15th. The most severe Ebola outbreak in Congo was from 2018-2020, with approximately 3,500 suspected cases but nearly 2,300 deaths.

Across Africa, the Ebola epidemic over the past 50 years (since 1976) has claimed the lives of more than 15,000 people, making it one of the world's leading infectious diseases with the highest mortality rates.
