“Everything will be okay”

“I want to reassure the Chinese students who are studying in the United States that everything is going to be fine. Everything is going to be resolved,” the US President said when asked about the message he wanted to send to the group of Chinese students at this time.

“We just want to look at individuals. This will apply to all universities,” the US President added, showing a more moderate attitude compared to the tough statements made before.

During this press conference, the US President also mentioned Harvard University: “I don’t understand why Harvard won’t give us the list of international students. It seems like something is going on. They should give us the list to get out of trouble. They don’t want to give us the list, probably because there are names that they think will cause big trouble.”

Mr. Trump also emphasized: “I want people to come to America who love this country, care for America and cherish our values.”

However, according to the SCMP news (Hong Kong, China), this reassuring statement by US President Donald Trump made Chinese students studying in the US even more confused, because they felt confused.

Career plans collapse unexpectedly

In fact, the US media has reported cases of Chinese international students being affected by what is happening.

Zhang, a computer science PhD student from China, was full of hope for a future of studying, researching and working in the United States. But his visa was revoked as soon as he re-entered the country last week.

Zhang went on a scientific research mission back home, but as soon as he returned to the US, his American dream ended.

Zhang was deported and banned from entering the United States for the next five years on suspicion of collecting research results in the United States. He denied the allegations. Back in China, Zhang is considering his next move.

“I didn’t expect things to be so harsh. My career future suddenly had to change direction, and I was completely helpless about what happened,” Zhang shared.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's recent announcement that he would revoke visas for students from China who have "sensitive" ties or are studying in "strategic" fields has raised concerns among the Chinese student community in the US.

American media reports that groups of Chinese students studying abroad are very confused. Study abroad forums are exploding with comments. Many educational consulting centers and law offices receive a series of calls from Chinese students studying abroad.

China's Foreign Ministry has criticized the US government's decision, calling it a politically motivated "discriminatory" move.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese students who once dreamed of experiencing a world-class university education and building a bright future in the United States now face an uncertain reality.

Jolie has just been accepted into the master's program in architecture at Harvard University. She does not dare to return to China for the summer, for fear that she will not be able to return to the US to continue her master's studies.

Cheng, a PhD student majoring in theoretical chemistry, said he and many of his fellow students in the US are losing their spirit of learning and research.

“We dropped out of our finals and studies because we were so discouraged. We lived in constant fear because of the constant policy changes. Everything suddenly became unpredictable,” Cheng confided anonymously to the US media.

Consider redirection

In the current climate, many Chinese students are starting to consider other options. Lou, a math major studying in the United States, returned to Guangzhou, China, for the summer. “My whole family is worried about whether I will be banned from entering the United States,” she said.

Lou said she might consider moving to Europe to continue her studies if the situation continues to change. “I am passionate about mathematics and there are many good schools in Europe,” Lou said.

The cost of studying in the US can be as high as $80,000 a year, much higher than studying in Europe or Asia. In recent years, the number of Chinese students studying in the US has been decreasing due to increasing political tensions.

An education consultant in Shanghai (China) said that since 2018, more and more Chinese families have shifted their children's study abroad direction to the UK, Canada, Australia... due to concerns about fluctuations in the study abroad process in the US.
