On September 22, the Ukrinform news agency reported that the Ukrainian President is expected to present what he calls a “victory plan” to his US counterpart Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in private meetings scheduled for September 26.
Zelensky also hopes to meet Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has called Washington's aid policy to its ally Kiev a waste of money. The former US president said he could meet Zelensky this week but did not specify a date.
His trip comes as the US seeks to deploy a $375 million military aid package to Ukraine, breaking Washington's trend of providing aid in smaller packages that have been delayed for months.
Ukraine's leader has long expressed concern about weapons shortages, a worry that has become more urgent as Russia attacks the country's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter months.
On September 20, Reuters quoted two US officials as saying that an aid package, expected to be announced this week, includes patrol boats, additional ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), 155 mm and 105 mm artillery shells, spare parts and other weapons.
Officials said the content and size of the aid package could change in the coming days.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Sputnik news agency quoted information from the White House press pool as saying that US President Joe Biden answered "no" when asked whether he would decide to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles provided by Washington to attack deep into Russian territory.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that NATO member states were not only discussing the possibility of allowing Kiev to use Western long-range weapons, but also, importantly, considering whether to directly participate in the conflict in Ukraine.
The Kremlin chief warned that the direct involvement of Western countries would change the nature of the conflict and Moscow would be forced to make decisions based on threats to Russia.
