Famous branded eyeglasses are sold widely in many markets and stores in Ho Chi Minh City at surprisingly cheap prices, showing signs of being counterfeit.

From large, reputable stores

According to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, in Ho Chi Minh City, fake branded eyeglasses are also being sold everywhere at incredibly low prices. Branded eyeglasses that used to cost thousands of dollars on official websites are now commonly found in markets and stores for only a few tens to a few hundred thousand dong.

According to reporters' observations at some large-scale optical stores in Ho Chi Minh City such as Thai Viet Anh Optical (Ward 10, Go Vap District), Viet Tien Optical (Ward 11, Binh Thanh District) and Dien Bien Phu Optical (Ward 13, Binh Thanh District), many products with famous brands such as Gucci, Dior, RayBan... are sold quite commonly.

These glasses are displayed attractively in glass cabinets, accompanied by packaging, boxes and warranty cards like genuine products, with prices ranging from a few hundred thousand VND to nearly one million VND each. However, when asked about the origin of the products, most employees only gave vague answers or said that these were "company goods", "hand-carried goods" or "custom-made goods".

In particular, along Dien Bien Phu Street in Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, there are many large optical stores, featuring long-standing brands such as Branded Optical, High-Tech Hospital Optical, Dien Bien Phu Hospital Optical, Salenoptic Optical, and Dien Bien Phu Optical. Thanks to its location near Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital (280 Dien Bien Phu, Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3), this area has become a familiar destination for many customers who need to measure and buy prescription glasses, fashion glasses, as well as other services.

Thanks to its "prime" location, the Salenoptic Optical store at 291 Dien Bien Phu is quite crowded.

Posing as a customer in need of buying eyeglasses, the reporter went to the Salenoptic store at 291 Dien Bien Phu (Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) to learn about the consulting and sales process here. What was recorded during the experience showed many unusual problems in business operations, from the invoice policy, the origin of goods to the way of providing "genuine" products.

At the store, there are many models of eyeglass frames for sale, with prices ranging from several hundred thousand to several million VND. For frames with the brands RayBan, Dior, etc., the prices are higher. A consultant here said: “The frames under 1 million VND are imported from Japan or Korea. The ones over 1 million VND are from France or Italy.”

However, when asked more specifically about the origin and specific brand of the product, the store staff only gave vague answers and did not provide accompanying documents. According to the information on the secondary label, these products are exclusively distributed by One Zero One Trading Company Limited.

In addition, when asked about the lenses, the staff said: "The lenses are manufactured by our company. If you want genuine products from other brands, we can order them for you and they will be delivered in about 2-3 hours."

Another surprising thing was when the reporter asked about red invoices (VAT invoices), the staff frankly replied: "Yes, we do not issue invoices for amounts under 3 million, only for amounts over 3 million."

Go to the stalls, market kiosks

Not only appearing in large stores, counterfeit glasses are also openly sold at many kiosks and stalls in markets such as Hanh Thong Tay (Go Vap District), Hoang Hoa Tham (Tan Binh District), Ba Chieu (Binh Thanh District)... In reality, famous brands such as Gucci, RayBan, Chanel, Dior... are widely offered for sale at prices ranging from only 40,000 - 300,000 VND, depending on the model, design and accompanying packaging. Some products are even labeled "Western goods", "Chinese goods" or "Vietnam export", but have absolutely no documents proving their origin.

At a shop in Ba Chieu market, when playing the role of a buyer, the reporter was introduced to all kinds of glasses with different prices by the seller. When asked if these were genuine or fake goods, the seller answered frankly: " There are no genuine goods here, only imitations of big brands. The highest price is about 300,000 VND, anything higher would be difficult to sell."

Actual records at some markets show that glasses without boxes are often sold at quite low prices, only from 40,000 to 80,000 VND per pair. Models with accompanying packaging such as plastic boxes or leather bags will be priced higher, ranging from 150,000 to 300,000 VND. Some stores also offer warranty commitments, allowing returns if customers are not satisfied, to create more trust and attract buyers. Although cheap, the appearance of these products is quite eye-catching, easily confusing consumers with genuine products.

According to some retailers, most of the glasses sold in the markets today are mainly sourced from China. These products are often ordered at wholesale prices through online channels, then shipped domestically to serve small businesses. Thanks to the variety of designs, low prices and ease of import, many people choose to import these glasses to sell in traditional markets or via social networks.

On the afternoon of May 29, the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) coordinated with Ben Thanh Ward Police, District 1 and a number of related units to inspect business activities at Saigon Square shopping center, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

At the time of inspection, the authorities initially recorded many products for sale labeled with luxury brands such as Rolex, Longines, Patek Philippe watches; handbags and wallets bearing the names of Louis Vuitton (LV), Gucci, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), Celine, Goyard, Chanel, Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Prada; and many models of eyeglasses labeled Gucci and other brands with signs of counterfeit trademarks.
