CNBC on May 7 quoted a report saying that the number of millionaires in New York City has increased by 48% over the past decade. The city's residents own more than $3 trillion in assets, larger than the gross domestic product (GDP) of Brazil, Italy or Canada. Tokyo, Japan, ranked third with 298,300 millionaires (down 5% over the past decade). According to Bloomberg, Singapore ranked fourth - the top destination for immigrant millionaires. About 3,400 such millionaires came to live in Singapore in 2023.

The financial boom of the past few years has fueled growth in the world’s richest cities, according to Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners. Overall, the United States leads the way in creating the most millionaires and billionaires in the world. According to the report, 11 U.S. cities are among the world’s 50 richest cities.
Many Chinese cities have also seen a surge in millionaires. Notably, Beijing, China, entered the top 10 richest cities in the world for the first time, with the number of millionaires increasing by 90% in the past 10 years - to 125,600 people.
Shenzhen is the fastest growing city in the world with a 140% growth rate in the number of millionaires over the past 10 years, according to Andrew Amoils, head of research at New World Wealth. The rate in Hangzhou is 125% and in Guangzhou is 110%.
