(LĐ online) - On October 10, at the hall of Finôm village, Hiep Thanh commune, Duc Trong district, the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Lam Dong province in coordination with the International Center for Agricultural Biology CABI organized a training course to learn about and manage the South American tomato leaf borer, with the participation of trainees who are officials of the Agricultural Center, plant protection staff, agricultural extension workers of localities, including: Duc Trong, Don Duong, Lam Ha and Da Lat city.

Within the framework of the training course, trainees were informed about the South American leaf borer, which causes serious damage to tomato plants and other nightshade crops; the morphological, biological, and ecological characteristics of this type of worm.

Specifically, the damage caused by the South American tomato leaf borer can be up to 80 - 100% if there are no appropriate and effective control measures. In recent years, the South American tomato leaf borer has spread widely and threatened the tomato production industry of many countries, including Vietnam. The South American tomato leaf borer was recorded in Vietnam in 2019 in Moc Chau, Son La .
In Lam Dong province, South American tomato leaf borer was recorded causing damage in some tomato growing areas in Duc Trong and Don Duong districts.
At the training course, trainees were also instructed on measures to prevent and control South American tomato leaf borers such as cultivation measures, using disease-free seedlings, crop rotation, balanced fertilization; using physical measures: cleaning fields, cleaning soil preparation tools, using light traps to attract adult South American tomato leaf borers; biological measures such as: spraying biological products, treating soil before planting and using chemical measures, rotating with pesticides with active ingredients...
Through the training course, the aim is to support technical staff of plant protection and agricultural extension in districts with large tomato growing areas in Lam Dong province with knowledge and skills in identifying and managing the South American tomato leaf borer.
