Painter Dang Xuan Hoa - Chairman of the Painting Arts Council, Vietnam Fine Arts Association, head of the jury of the third UOB Painting of the Year Vietnam 2025 competition - shared at the discussion on Contemporary on Heritage on May 7 in Hanoi .
The discussion was held at the exhibition space of the winning and finalist works of the 2nd UOB Painting of the Year Vietnam 2024 competition at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.
Vietnamese painting "has more soul"
Mr. Dang Xuan Hoa said that we joined the UOB competition a bit late compared to other countries in the region (just starting in 2023), but the artistic quality of the UOB Vietnam competition compared to the quality of UOB competitions in other countries in the Southeast Asian region is not inferior.
Even from a certain perspective, our contemporary art is more attractive, stronger with a larger team, expressing the Vietnamese soul more deeply, not easily mixed.
"Thai, Singaporean, and Indonesian artists paint with familiar tones and good works, but their perspective is no longer new.
The works of Vietnamese artists are more fresh and have more soul. That is the strength of Vietnamese art, very emotional and soulful.
You are strong in technique, but to make an impression on viewers, the soul must be the deciding factor," said artist Dang Xuan Hoa.
He said that when judging the UOB competition, he also prioritized works with modern thinking but must contain soul.

Composing with gratitude for art
Regarding the thinking of artists today, painter Dang Xuan Hoa worries that the current era of information chaos due to too much information also greatly affects the thinking of artists.
He saw many young artists with good vision but when it came to specific works, they were confused and lacked a distinct perspective to express their views. They were greedy for many things in their works.
"With just a mobile phone, artists can see the whole world . If they don't have enough professional skills, they will be easily influenced. That influence is good for the moment, but in the long run, it will damage the artist," said Dang Xuan Hoa.
He gave advice to young artists that they must be truly thirsty and eager to create new things, and must work harder if they hope to touch the eyes and emotions of viewers.
And artists must not let society's aesthetic taste influence them, if they want to go far on the path of art.
On the topic of creating on a traditional basis, artist Dang Xuan Hoa shares the view that one must thoroughly research and explore the traditional heritage of one's ancestors in order to find one's own path.
He also shared his experience that artists who want to "do something" for art must approach art with innocence and purity, and create with gratitude for art.
