The results exceeded expectations.
In Kim Dinh commune, Kim Son district, this year's winter-spring crop marks the first time local farmers have experimented with the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety. Mr. Tran Van Tu, a farmer from Hamlet 7, Kim Dinh commune, shared: “This is the first time I've grown the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety. Despite unfavorable weather conditions this season, with lower temperatures and rainfall than the average for many years, and less sunshine, Ngoc Nuong 9 still developed well. The number of panicles per clump is high, the grains are tightly packed, and the percentage of empty grains is almost zero, so the yield will surely be 2.2 quintals/acre or more.”
Mr. Hoang Khac Vinh, Director of Kim Dinh Cooperative, added: “This winter-spring season, we introduced the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety for trial on an area of 3 hectares with 8 participating households. Initially, many farmers were skeptical and hesitant to plant the new variety. But now, looking at this field of rice heavy with grain, many regret not participating.”
According to Mr. Vinh, for many years, the cooperative members only cultivated a few old rice varieties such as Bac Thom, LT 2, and Nep 97, which have degenerated, are easily susceptible to pests and diseases, and yield low productivity. “This year, we experimented with the Ngoc Nuong 9 variety, and we found it easy to care for, has good yield, is less prone to pests and diseases, and produces high-quality rice. We are confident that next season the farmers will expand the area planted with this new variety,” Mr. Vinh affirmed.
The story of bringing the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety to Kim Dinh owes a great deal to Mr. Tran Van The, Secretary of the Party Committee of Kim Dinh commune. He was the one who proactively contacted the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection and Vinaseed Company to bring this rice variety to the locality for testing.
When asked if it was "risky" to decide to experiment with the new variety in the winter-spring crop – the most important rice crop of the year – Mr. The smiled and replied: "I was introduced to the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety by Vinaseed staff in the 2024 summer crop and had my family try planting it. Seeing the good yield and quality, I decided to bring it back for the villagers to experiment with in this season. Moreover, throughout the rice crop, the company's technical staff regularly visited the fields, advised, and supported the technical process, so we didn't have to worry too much."
According to feedback from trial farmers, the Ngoc Nuong 9 pure rice variety adapts well to local natural conditions, is easy to cultivate, is less susceptible to pests and diseases, and yields relatively high productivity. In fact, the yield in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop reached approximately 64 quintals/hectare.
In particular, this rice variety has firm, heavy grains. While other rice varieties typically yield 6.2 kg of rice from 10 kg of paddy, Ngoc Nuong 9 yields slightly more, around 6.5 kg. This brings higher economic efficiency to farmers.
More quality options for farmers
The Ngoc Nuong 9 pure rice variety, researched and developed by Vinaseed, has been widely distributed in the northern region and is currently undergoing trial production in southern provinces with the aim of expanding its distribution nationwide.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Director of the Ha Nam Branch of Vietnam Seed Corporation (Vinaseed), said: “When researching and developing new rice varieties, the most important goal is to ensure they are easy to cultivate, easy to apply mechanization, and help reduce input costs by about 3%. Besides that, the company also pays special attention to rice quality, prioritizing the high-end rice segment to meet the modern consumer trend of “eating well, eating clean.” Ngoc Nuong 9 was created to meet those needs.”
This is the third time the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has been introduced for demonstration production in Ninh Binh. In the two previous seasons, this rice variety was successfully tested at Van Tra Cooperative, Yen Thang commune; Lien Phuong Cooperative, Yen Nhan commune (Yen Mo district); and Kien Trung Cooperative, Kien Thai, Khanh Trung commune (Yen Khanh district).
Field production results show that the Ngoc Nuong 9 pure rice variety has outstanding advantages: good growth and development, less susceptible to pests and diseases. Strong stems, resistant to lodging, making it suitable for mechanization in production. Wide adaptability, suitable for many ecological zones and seasons of the year. With good intensive farming techniques, the yield reaches approximately 65 quintals/hectare. Farmers consider it one of the best rice varieties ever, both in taste and aroma, with delicious, soft, and flavorful cooked rice.
After three harvests, the farmers have learned important lessons about cultivation: focusing nutrients in the early stages to promote healthy plant growth, then gradually reducing them to prevent lodging and limit pests and diseases.
Representatives from the Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection assessed: “Initial results show that the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has good adaptability, vigorous growth, and fairly good cold tolerance, standing out compared to many other rice varieties under the same conditions. Compared to the control variety ST25, the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has a shorter growth and tillering period, and a higher percentage of effective tillers.”
In particular, the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety has a lower percentage of empty grains than the control variety (2%), and its theoretical and projected yields are higher than the control. The actual yield reached 64.26 quintals/hectare (equivalent to 231.3 kg/sao), which is 2.73 quintals/hectare (equivalent to 9.8 kg/sao) higher than the control. Furthermore, the variety produces good quality rice, with sticky, fluffy, soft rice and a light aroma. Overall, Ngoc Nuong 9 shows high potential in terms of yield and quality.
In the coming period, the Sub-Department will continue to coordinate demonstrations in several localities in the province in subsequent seasons to monitor and accurately assess the adaptability (cold tolerance, lodging resistance, and resistance to pests and diseases, especially leaf blast and neck blast in the winter-spring season and bacterial leaf blight in the summer season), as well as the production efficiency of the Ngoc Nuong 9 rice variety, in order to expand its cultivation throughout the province.
