The Swedish automaker has just issued a recall notice for 413,151 vehicles in the United States and 40,673 vehicles in Canada. The recalled vehicles were all manufactured from 2021.

In fact, this is not a very serious error and only requires updating the software that controls the rear camera. According to the manufacturer, when shifting into reverse, the rear camera may not work. This is considered a safety system that does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 regarding rear visibility, and led to the recall decision.

The list of affected Volvo vehicles includes:

Volvo also said that the software bug could cause the rearview camera to not display during a certain driving cycle. A fault code could trigger under certain conditions that could prevent the display from displaying. The Swedish automaker did not specify the nature of the fault code, but drivers will see an error message on the instrument cluster that reads “Camera temporarily unavailable.” There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Volvo first learned of the potential problem in the spring of 2021, when the first reports of the error message appeared; since then, the company has received 57 reports of potentially related problems. An investigation into the problem was launched on March 26, 2025, which ultimately led to a recall starting April 30, 2025.

Fortunately, this is a simple and easy fix. Volvo will simply update the software when customers visit the dealership or remotely over the air for vehicles equipped with OTA technology. Volvo dealers in the US and Canada have been notified of the problem and the recall plan, and Volvo owners can take their cars to their dealerships to have the problem fixed starting June 24.
