Farmers in Chi Lang Nam commune (Thanh Mien district), in collaboration with the Center for Research and Development of Flowers and Ornamental Plants, have implemented a model titled "Research on selecting and developing a model for cultivating several lotus varieties linked to tourism development in Hai Duong." Accordingly, the people are planting four types of lotus: Super (lotus for flowers), Quan Am Trang (lotus for rhizomes), Mat Bang (lotus for seeds), and Van Dai 1 (lotus for tubers) on an area of 3 hectares in the Co Island area. Planting is scheduled to begin in April 2025.
The results showed that the lotus varieties were affected by pests such as green caterpillars, thrips, golden apple snails, anthracnose, etc. However, farmers were guided on proper care measures, so they were not significantly affected.

For Super lotus, the first harvest can be done about 50-60 days after planting, with subsequent harvests every 2-3 days. Super lotus yields approximately 53 flowers per 10 m² , which is higher than the local variety (9 flowers per 10 m² ). Super lotus flowers are priced from 50,000 to 60,000 VND per 10 flowers, with an average daily yield of 500-700 flowers per hectare.
With the flat lotus variety, the average seed yield is approximately 4.2 kg/ 10m² , which is 0.7 kg/ 10m² higher than the control variety. The selling price of fresh, unhulled lotus seeds ranges from 50,000 to 60,000 VND/kg, while the selling price of fresh, hulled lotus seeds ranges from 180,000 to 200,000 VND/kg.
With the white Quan Am lotus variety, lotus rhizomes can be harvested approximately 40-50 days after planting. The yield of rhizomes reaches 3.5 kg/ 10m² , which is 0.7 kg/ 10m² higher than the control variety, with a selling price of 40,000-50,000 VND per kg.

Regarding lotus grown for its tubers, the yield is currently unassessed due to its recent cultivation, however, fresh lotus tubers are selling for 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.
According to calculations by the unit implementing the model, 1 hectare of raw lotus yields 120-150 million VND/year, and after processing, it reaches 220-250 million VND/year, resulting in a profit of 50-70 million VND/ha, 3-5 times higher than rice cultivation. In addition, lotus cultivation also promotes cultural and tourism development.
