Medvedev to face Sinner in the Australian Open final.
Australian Daniil Medvedev came from behind to win for the second time in five sets at this year's Australian Open, defeating Alexander Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 in the semi-finals on January 26.
There are 3 new updates.
Medvedev is the 13th male player in the history of the Open Era to reach the Australian Open final three or more times. He previously lost to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022. In this year's final, Medvedev will face Jannik Sinner, who defeated Djokovic in the first semi-final. Having to play three five-set matches since the start of the tournament could put Medvedev at a physical disadvantage against his in-form Italian opponent. The Russian player has played 20 hours and 33 minutes across six matches in the tournament, while Sinner has only played 14 hours and 44 minutes.

Sinner lost only one set on his way to the final of this year's Australian Open. He has been the ATP's best-performing player for the past few months, with 19 wins in 20 matches since October 2023. If he defeats Medvedev in the final on January 28th, Sinner will climb to his career-best ranking of world number three.
Both finalists shared the commonality of not participating in any warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open. Medvedev didn't train as much as Sinner before heading to Melbourne. The Russian player's ball control improved with each match, particularly after his comeback victory against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, the five-set match against Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals, and his comeback win against Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
Sinner lost to Medvedev in all six of their first encounters, but narrowed the head-to-head gap with two consecutive victories in the ATP 500 finals in Beijing and Vienna in October 2023. The Italian then went on to beat Medvedev in the semi-finals of the 2023 ATP Finals. In those matches, Medvedev's deep return style proved ineffective against the younger player's powerful and accurate shots.
Sinner's biggest title before this was at the Masters 1000 event in Toronto in August 2023. With his incredible performances at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the 22-year-old is confidently aiming for his first Grand Slam title. But Medvedev's experience and habit of coming from behind could prevent Sinner from achieving glory in Melbourne.
