China condemns the attack on its consulate in Myanmar.

(CLO) China condemned the attack on its consulate in Mandalay and called on the Myanmar authorities to make every effort to apprehend the perpetrators.

At a regular press briefing on October 21, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that the explosion, which occurred at 5 p.m. on October 18, had damaged part of the grounds of the Chinese Consulate in Myanmar. The explosion caused no casualties.

Mr. Lin said China had sent a "serious protest" to the Myanmar authorities, calling for a thorough investigation and every effort to severely punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law.

He added that the Chinese Consulate recently reminded all Chinese citizens, businesses, and groups in Myanmar to pay attention to the security situation and take necessary precautions.

The incident occurred last week following a surge in anti-China sentiment on social media in Myanmar, fueled by recent pressure from China to force rebel groups to cease fighting against Myanmar's military government.

China's pressure on rebel groups to cease fighting has fueled suspicions among Myanmar citizens that China is supporting the military regime. Myanmar has been in turmoil since February 2021 when the military overthrew the civilian government in a coup.
