China grows its own durian, what are the results?

(Dan Tri) - After many years of experimental cultivation, domestic Chinese durian has officially been introduced to the market on a large scale. This year's durian output is expected to reach nearly 2,000 tons.

China - the market that consumes more than 85% of the global durian output each year - is rapidly expanding the area of many of Vietnam's main export fruits such as dragon fruit and durian. After about 10 years, China's dragon fruit growing area has surpassed Vietnam's.

As for durian, since 2019, China has been experimenting with growing it on Hainan Island. By 2024, the country will expand the growing area to 2,700 hectares. In addition to Hainan, provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan are also actively promoting large-scale durian cultivation.

According to the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the Hainan durian industry is growing strongly in the Chinese market. Hainan durian has the advantage of natural ripening, no need for long-term transportation, thick flesh, sweet and less smelly than imported durian.

The durian harvest season in Hainan Island typically runs from late June to early July, with the main varieties being Monthong, Musang King, Kanyao and a small amount of blackthorn durian. Durian production is expected to reach nearly 2,000 tonnes this year, several times more than the first crop in 2023.

"However, the industry also faces many challenges, including uneven cultivation techniques, poor fruit quality due to early harvesting and poor processing, along with weather risks such as storms," the Import-Export Department assessed.

The growth of Hainan durians poses a challenge to traditional durian exporters such as Thailand and Vietnam. To maintain their position, the regulator said exporters need to focus on improving the quality and freshness of their products.

Some experts believe that Hainan durians are unlikely to completely replace imports due to their origin and unique flavor. The Chinese durian market is still huge and there is room for both domestic and imported durians to coexist.

According to statistics from the Customs Department, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover in June reached 806.9 million USD, up 20.7% compared to June 2024. This is the month with the highest export turnover of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable products since the beginning of the year. In general, the total export turnover of fruit and vegetable products in the first 6 months reached 3.1 billion USD, down 6.7% compared to the same period last year.

The Import-Export Department said that in June, fruit and vegetable exports made an impressive breakthrough with the recovery of durian. Durian exports have become vibrant again, not only to the Chinese market but also to Thailand. Key durian growing regions such as the Central Highlands and the Southeast - where cadmium contamination is low - have helped more goods meet export standards.

At the same time, businesses also proactively check the quality from the garden, tighten the purchasing and packaging process. The supply of durian in Thailand is interrupted between growing areas, increasing the demand for imports from Vietnam. In addition to durian, many other items such as coconut, passion fruit, and processed mango also grew positively in June.
