(HNMO) - The fascinating stories that stimulate the reader's imagination are collected in the book "Vietnamese Legends", an attractive gift for children on International Children's Day and this summer.
Vietnamese legends are a genre of written literature, focusing on exploiting strange, fantastic motifs, the characters are ancient Vietnamese heroes who are legendary, deified, of epic stature, or characters that only appear in the imagination such as saints, gods, fairies, demons, evil spirits, animals, trees... with unpredictable transformations and even human lives existing around us.
By using fantasy elements as a way to convey content, legends always create a strong appeal to all ages, all times, especially children.
The book “Vietnamese Legendary Stories” has just been published by the Truth National Political Publishing House, selecting 50 stories which are miracles, genealogies and fairy tales with strong legendary elements, extracted from the book “Treasure of Vietnamese Legendary Stories” compiled by Vu Ngoc Khanh and Nguyen Quang An in a number of large books such as “Hat Dong Thu Di”, “Cong Du Tiep Ky”, “Son Cu Tap Thuat”, “Kien Van Tieu Luc”, “Tang Thuong Ngu Luc”, “Lan Tri Kien Van Luc”, “Thanh Tong Di Thao”, “Truyen Ky Man Luc”, “Truyen Ky Tan Pha”…
Among them, there are stories such as: "Tiger servant" (being a tiger's servant), "Quy nu" (a girl in turtle's skin), "Ba Be Lake story", "Dong Dinh Lake god", "The legend of Linh Lang Dai Vuong", "The legend of Dai Thanh Tu Dao Hanh", "The Immortal Monk of Nua mountain", "The buffalo herder, showing magical powers", "Truong Ba's soul, butcher's skin", "The story of Tu Thuc marrying a fairy wife", "The story of the Yaksha general", "The insects arguing with each other", "The story of the judge of Tan Vien temple"...
Associate Professor Vu Ngoc Khanh - co-collector and selector of this book shared that when it comes to Vietnamese legendary stories, readers are quite familiar with "Linh Nam chich quai", "Viet dien u linh", so the stories in those stories do not appear in this book... The compilers have gathered from many different sources, selecting stories with quite strong legendary elements, so that readers can have a clear idea of this genre of writing and compilation.
Besides bringing readers, especially children, interesting and attractive stories, the book is a reference source to help readers better understand the genre of legendary stories through the development stages of Vietnamese literary history.
