On the afternoon of May 5, at Kon Tum province, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang chaired a national online conference on forest management, protection, forest fire prevention and fighting in 2023 and the first 4 months of 2024.
The conference was held online nationwide.
At Long An province, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam chaired. Attending were representatives of departments, branches and localities.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requested ministries, functional agencies and localities to continue reviewing forest areas for planning purposes, developing plans to implement policies on forest protection and development. Review, propose supplements and perfect policies and mechanisms on sustainable forestry development.
Promote propaganda, raise awareness and responsibility for forest fire protection and prevention; proactively plan and implement forest fire prevention and control measures during the dry peak months; pay attention to and improve the lives of ethnic minorities living near forests.

According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2023 and the first months of 2024, ministries, functional branches and localities have focused on leading, directing and implementing policies on forest fire management, protection, prevention and control and sustainable forestry development. At the same time, improving the capacity of forest fire risk forecasting and warning; promptly detecting and handling violations of the Forestry Law.
In 2023, 60/60 provinces and cities with forests have announced the forest status, with a total area of 14,860,309 hectares (natural forest is 10,129,751 hectares; planted forest is 4,730,557 hectares). The forest area meeting the criteria for calculating the national forest cover rate is 42.02%.
From 2023 to now, there have been 399 forest fires nationwide, damaging 1,145 hectares.
However, in 2023 and the first 4 months of 2024, the country discovered 3,977 violations affecting forests, damaging 1,230 hectares of forest. At the same time, 399 forest fires also occurred during this period, damaging over 1,145 hectares of forest.
The main cause of forest fires is extreme hot weather and slash-and-burn farming. Forest fires have greatly affected forest management and protection, causing economic losses and affecting the ecological environment./.
