When my friends and colleagues learned that I was applying to work at the Quang Tri newspaper, many asked why I chose to return to my hometown when others wanted to work in the "most livable city." I simply replied that my heart always yearned for my hometown and I wanted to return.
My joining the Quang Tri newspaper was a stroke of luck. The Economic & Urban newspaper where I worked (from 2018 to 2024) had a sister-newspaper relationship with the Quang Tri newspaper. Many social charity programs were jointly organized by the two newspapers in Quang Tri, and I was often sent by my agency to participate. Even during natural disasters like storms and floods, my agency assigned me to cover events. As a native of Quang Tri, I was always excited when my agency assigned me to work in my hometown. A colleague jokingly said that returning to Quang Tri was like "a fish finding water." Indeed, everything went smoothly for me back home because I received support and assistance from my colleagues.
Those business trips gave me the opportunity to interact and network with the editorial board leaders and colleagues at the Quang Tri newspaper. From there, the relationship grew stronger and closer, giving me more confidence to express my desire to join the newspaper.
In December 2023, I had the opportunity to meet Editor-in-Chief Truong Duc Minh Tu at the 25th anniversary celebration of the first issue of the Economic & Urban Newspaper in Hanoi . During our conversation, I boldly expressed my desire to return to my hometown to work and settle down with my family, and Mr. Tu supported me. With continued support from the Editorial Board and the agency, I officially became a member of the Quang Tri Newspaper from December 1st, 2024.
To be honest, I've had a connection with Quang Tri Newspaper since my student days. Back then, I was studying journalism at Hue University of Science, and in 2007 I did an internship at Quang Tri Newspaper. The newspaper's headquarters were then located at 26 Tran Hung Dao Street, and I and Hoang Tao (now working at Tuoi Tre Newspaper) were mentored by Mr. Le Minh.
The first article Táo and I wrote together was published in the Quảng Trị Newspaper, about a veteran who became a successful businessman in Hải Lăng. I remember that it took several months before we received the complimentary copies of the newspaper and the payment. Back then, journalism students were so proud to have a news item or article published that they would read it over and over again without getting tired. And with the payment, we'd throw a big party with our friends.
It was also by chance that when I started working at Quang Tri Newspaper, I was assigned to the Reader Relations and Social Work Department. When we met, Mr. Le Minh said, "It seems we have a connection." At Quang Tri Newspaper, I received much attention, support, help, sharing, and encouragement from the Editorial Board leaders, the department leaders, and my colleagues, which helped me gradually adapt.
Editor-in-Chief Truong Duc Minh Tu, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Ty, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Chi Linh always gave me advice, guidance, and support to help me publish my first articles in the newspaper.
Mr. Ho Nguyen Kha, right at the end of the month, added a topic for me to work on. Ms. Phan Hoai Huong kindly assigned me an interview with the Provincial Police Chief for the 2025 New Year's Day issue. The leaders of other departments were also very kind, guiding and editing each news item and article so that I could have complete works for tomorrow's issue...
The love and care from the agency motivated me to complete my tasks. News reports and articles addressing sensitive issues were gradually recognized, making me proud to be a member of the Quang Tri newspaper. My colleagues often say the agency is a green home.
I have always been proud to live, to be loved, to share, and to fulfill my passion for journalism in the shared home of Quang Tri journalism—my hometown!
