The US dollar eased slightly in the last trading session but is on track to gain against major currencies, including the Swiss franc, Japanese yen and euro, after the US-UK trade deal raised optimism about upcoming US-China talks.
Financial markets are now looking ahead to trade talks between Washington and Beijing scheduled to begin today, May 10, in Switzerland.
Previously, on April 2, Mr. Trump announced a basic reciprocal tariff of 10% on most trading partners and from 11-50% on 57% of other partners, including the European Union (EU). He then postponed imposing high reciprocal tariffs to make time for negotiations. At the same time, his administration imposed a 25% tariff on imported cars and ended all tariff exemptions on imported aluminum and steel.
“The market is optimistic about progress in the US-China trade talks in particular and more trade deals in general,” said Matthew Weller, director of market research at StoneX.
