USD exchange rate today in the world

The US dollar rose slightly after the European Central Bank (ECB) kept interest rates unchanged, with markets focusing on tariffs and the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) policy.

The US dollar was little changed against the euro on Thursday after the ECB decided to keep interest rates unchanged, while the greenback's volatility against the Japanese yen was also limited, as expectations of a possible rate hike in Japan somewhat offset concerns about political risks after Sunday's election.

In the US, the USD recorded a slight increase at the end of a rather quiet trading session, in the context that investors are preparing for an upcoming week full of important economic information.

The ECB, as widely expected, kept its policy rate unchanged at 2% at its meeting on Thursday, in what was seen as a “pause” after more than a year of monetary easing as it awaits further clarity on the trade outlook between Europe and the United States.

"The view that the ECB will keep interest rates unchanged in the near term is gaining more and more traction. We have revised our expectations for a rate cut in September to just under 50%," said Shaun Osborne, chief foreign exchange strategist at Scotiabank (Toronto).

In Japan, Bank of Japan (BoJ) Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida said the trade deal reached with Washington on Tuesday has significantly reduced economic uncertainties, thereby adding to expectations for the resumption of the interest rate hike cycle in the country.

However, analysts warn that the yen will still face challenges after Japan's upper house election on Sunday, when the opposition is considering filing a no-confidence motion against the government.

In contrast, the European Union is nearing a deal to impose a common 15% tariff on EU goods, according to diplomatic sources. The tariff, which could include cars, would mirror the framework of the recently concluded US-Japan trade deal.

“The ECB is facing a very different quantitative challenge than the BoJ,” said Thierry Wizman, global FX and interest rates strategist at Macquarie Group. “The euro has already appreciated significantly more against the yen in 2025, which means the deflationary impact of US tariffs could be stronger in the EU than in Japan, or at least the ECB suspects so,” he added.

The euro edged down 0.03 percent to $1.1766, still hovering near its peak of $1.1830 hit earlier this month - its highest in more than three years.

Meanwhile, the dollar rose 0.27 percent against the yen to 146.88 yen, after hitting a two-week low earlier in the session of 145.86 yen.
