USD exchange rate today in the world
The US dollar rose on Friday, supported by upbeat economic data that suggested the Federal Reserve may not be in a hurry to resume its rate-cutting cycle, while clearer progress on tariff negotiations helped ease market uncertainty.
The greenback was little changed ahead of a report showing new orders for key U.S.-made capital goods unexpectedly fell in June, while shipments rose slightly, suggesting a significant slowdown in business spending on equipment in the second quarter.
“The dollar has regained some ground in the past two days, after coming under pressure earlier in the week… largely due to a series of positive US economic data, which reinforces the argument that the Fed can remain patient,” said Elias Haddad, senior market strategist at investment bank Brown Brothers Harriman in London.
Still, the dollar index is on track for its biggest weekly decline in a month as investors await further progress on tariff talks and policy meetings by major central banks next week. Meanwhile, the pound fell after UK retail sales fell short of expectations.
Both the Fed and the Bank of Japan (BOJ) are expected to keep interest rates unchanged at their upcoming meetings, but investors will now focus on post-meeting statements to gauge the outlook for further policy.
“We see some grounds for optimism at the Fed meeting,” BNP Paribas wrote in a research note. “Economic uncertainty around trade policy, while not completely gone, has significantly reduced.”
Political factors continue to impact both central banks, especially in the US, as President Donald Trump on Thursday renewed his call for the Fed to lower interest rates amid tensions with Chairman Jerome Powell.
The US dollar fell against the euro and the Japanese yen in late trading, dragging the dollar index - a gauge of the greenback's strength against six major currencies - down 0.8% for the week, marking its weakest performance in a month. However, the dollar recovered slightly by 0.2% to 97.663 on Friday.
The yen weakened somewhat after weaker-than-expected inflation data from Tokyo. USD/JPY rose 0.4% to 147.59 yen, but for the week, the greenback was still down 0.9% against the yen - its lowest level since June 23.
The euro held steady at $1.1741, but is on track to gain nearly 1% for the week - its best weekly gain in a month.
Against the US dollar, the pound fell 0.6% to trade at $1.3434.
