Yen exchange rate trend forecast

Investors are gradually adjusting their expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) in the near term. In addition, the BoJ has just announced a reduction in its core inflation forecast for fiscal 2026 from 2% to 1.7%, reflecting a weaker price outlook than previously expected.

However, the BoJ maintained an optimistic stance, stressing that its 2% inflation target could still be achieved by the end of the forecast period that runs through 2027. The agency also affirmed that it would continue to pursue a rate hike path if economic growth conditions and inflation pressures continue to strengthen, in order to restore strength to the weakened Yen.

At its policy meeting last week, the BoJ decided to keep interest rates unchanged at 0.5% and continued to signal caution. Governor Kazuo Ueda said the BoJ would need more time to carefully assess factors such as wage growth and price trends before deciding on the next rate hike.

Still, the market expects the BoJ to raise interest rates at least once in 2025, although the pace and timing are becoming increasingly unpredictable as the global economy faces uncertainties from trade policy and imported inflation.
