The rise of AI has raised concerns that the technology will eliminate millions of jobs around the world . The International Monetary Fund has warned that about 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected by the development of AI.
Billionaire Bill Gates doesn't necessarily disagree with that view, but he also believes that history has shown that the emergence of every new technology always comes with initial fears, but also new opportunities.
"When people saw agricultural productivity in 1900, they said, 'Well, what are we going to do?' In fact, so many new things, so many new types of jobs have been created, and our lives are much better than they were when people were farming. That's going to be the same," Gates said.
In an interview on January 16, Mr. Gates predicted that in the next 5 years, AI will make people's lives easier, especially helping doctors do paperwork, which is a part of their job they dislike, and can do it very efficiently.
Billionaire Bill Gates also said that the application of AI in medicine is in its early stages and will take a long time to implement. This work is expected to create the premise for a technology boom by the end of this decade.
Because “there’s no need for a lot of new hardware,” accessing AI will happen “through the phone or PC you already have, using your existing internet connection,” the billionaire said.
According to him, the improvements to ChatGPT-4 by OpenAI developers are "incredible" because it is essentially capable of reading and writing. Therefore, ChatGPT-4 is "almost like an office worker who can tutor, give health advice, help with programming, handle tech support calls."
Therefore, the Microsoft co-founder believes that incorporating this technology intothe education or medical fields would be "fantastic".
Microsoft has a multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI, and Bill Gates remains one of Microsoft's largest shareholders.
The billionaire stressed that the Gates Foundation (a charity founded by him and his ex-wife, Melinda Gates) aims to ensure that the "lag" of benefiting from technology between people in poor countries and rich countries "is very short".
Meanwhile, an IMF report is less optimistic on the issue, saying that AI will deepen inequality without intervention from politicians.
Bill Gates is worth $140 billion, making him the fourth richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. He would still be the richest person in the world if he hadn't pledged to give away his fortune.
Speaking to CNN, the billionaire said he was not worried about losing his fortune: "I have more than enough money to spend on myself. I'm trying to lower my position on the list and I will be proud when I drop off that list."
The Microsoft co-founder and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, have both pledged to donate the majority of their fortunes to the Gates Foundation, which they founded together 20 years ago, as well as to other charitable efforts.
He and friends like billionaire Warren Buffett have donated about $100 billion to his foundation, he said. At a rate of $9 billion a year, Gates predicts he will give away all his money in about 20 years.
