According to a VNA correspondent in France, on October 15, at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board unanimously approved Vietnam's initiative to propose the United Nations consider announcing the "International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development" as soon as possible, prioritizing the 2027-2036 period.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, introduced the initiative at the meeting.
She stressed that the overarching goal of the initiative is to promote the crucial role of culture in promoting sustainable development in countries, while contributing to responding to the complex challenges of our time to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all.
According to the process, the proposal will be submitted to the UNESCO General Conference at its November 2025 session and then to the United Nations General Assembly for consideration and approval, expected in 2026.
The unanimous approval by the UNESCO Executive Board this time is considered an important first step towards officially announcing the "International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development," an initiative bearing the Vietnamese mark at the global level.

This initiative demonstrates efforts and concrete steps to contribute to implementing the Party and State's guidelines and policies on deep international integration in the new situation, reviving and developing Vietnamese culture in the new era, while promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy, cultural diplomacy and foreign culture.
This is an important contribution of Vietnam to promoting the mission, goals and role of UNESCO, especially in the cultural field, and at the same time demonstrates Vietnam's proactive, positive and responsible spirit as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2021-2025 term, which is highly appreciated by many countries and UNESCO leaders.
The UNESCO Executive Board's unanimous approval of Vietnam's proposal once again affirms Vietnam's role, position and prestige at UNESCO and in the international arena, and shows that Vietnam's proposal is in line with the common concerns of the international community, especially in the context of the world facing many extremely complex challenges today./.
