On June 24, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) in collaboration with the Vietnam Plant Breeding Association organized a scientific workshop on "Application of technology in vegetable and flower production in Hanoi".
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Master Le Thanh Tung, Head of the Knowledge Dissemination Department, Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, said that the workshop is a forum to connect scientists, businesses and farmers to promote the transfer of technical advances in breeding and high-tech farming, contributing to improving production efficiency, increasing income and developing circular and sustainable agriculture .
According to Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Long, Chairman of the Vietnam Plant Varieties Association, in 2024, Vietnam's total agricultural export turnover will reach a record 62.5 billion USD, an increase of 18.7% over the previous year.
Vegetable, flower and fruit exports alone account for more than 7 billion USD. It is forecasted that by 2030, the turnover could reach 15 billion USD if the problem of varieties and post-harvest technology is solved. Some domestic enterprises such as Viet Nong, Vinaseed, Golden Lotus Seeds, Tan Loc Phat, Trang Nong... have initially applied modern biotechnology methods to successfully select and create new vegetable varieties such as bitter melon, pumpkin, long beans, watermelon...
However, only about 5% of the nearly 400 seed companies in Vietnam have the capacity to research and produce seeds.
To promote the potential of flowers and ornamental plants, and make a breakthrough in agriculture with technology and domestic varieties, Deputy Director of the Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research, Dr. Dang Van Dong, said that by 2023, the total area of flower and ornamental plant cultivation in Hanoi will reach about 8,100 hectares.
The area is mainly concentrated in suburban areas, with 70% of the area belonging to the districts: Me Linh, Bac Tu Liem, Tay Ho, Dan Phuong, Thuong Tin. In which, Me Linh district is the key area with a scale of over 824 hectares, of which the area for growing cut flowers is about 667 hectares.
Along with the expansion of scale, the value of flower and ornamental plant production has also increased continuously. The total production value of the whole city is currently about 7,000 billion VND/year, in which many specialized areas have achieved outstanding economic efficiency.
Average income reaches 500 million - 1.5 billion VND/ha/year, even in some places reaching over 2.2 billion VND/ha/year, thanks to the application of high-quality chemical varieties, drip irrigation systems, net houses, membrane houses and high-tech agricultural production models.

At the workshop, many opinions agreed that, in order to effectively apply technology in the production of high-quality, sustainable vegetables and flowers, creating products that ensure food safety for consumers, it is necessary to promote the "three-house" linkage model: Scientists - Businessmen - Farmers.
Along with that, it is necessary to build a strict seed inspection system, plan concentrated seed production areas, and communicate to raise social awareness about the value of domestic seeds.
