Applying advanced processes to improve the quality of OCOP products

BAC GIANG - The application of international and national standards on quality such as: ISO, HACCP, GMP, VietGAP, GlobalGAP, organic... helps improve product quality and ensure food safety. Identifying that role, many enterprises and cooperatives in the province have invested in modern technology and equipment, applying advanced processes in production and processing stages to improve competitiveness and increase product value.

Investment in technology and equipment

According to regulations, to be certified as an OCOP product, production facilities must have a warehouse system for preserving goods and raw materials that meet food hygiene and safety standards. At the same time, there must be attention and investment in traceability activities, quality declaration records, appropriate design, packaging and labeling. In particular, for 3-star products, there must be a product quality control plan, production batch records; for 4-star products, there must be an advanced quality management certificate ISO/GMP/HACCP... and environmental protection according to current regulations. Regarding the production process, it must be built from the input stage of raw materials to the process of preliminary processing, processing, packaging, preservation and sale to the market.

In Chu town, Toan Cau Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company has invested more than 2 billion VND to use atmospheric packaging technology that meets international standards with the advantage of extending the preservation time and increasing the freshness of processed products. Thanks to that, up to now, the Company has OCOP products such as frozen lychee, lychee juice, canned fruit juice, canned sweet corn, soybeans, okra... exported to high-end markets such as: Japan, Europe, Australia... In particular, many of the Company's OCOP products have met international quality standards such as: ISO, HACCP, BNC of the UK, the United States...

In 2019, Binh Minh Organic Agriculture Cooperative in Nam Dong village, Danh Thang commune (Hiep Hoa) invested in building a factory and a controlled slaughter line for livestock and poultry. Here, the stages are carried out according to food safety procedures, from slaughtering to packaging in cold rooms and vacuum-sealed... To have quality raw materials, the Cooperative has cooperated with a number of organic pig farms, processed products all meet OCOP standards (3-star pork; 4-star ham, sausages), with clear evidence of quality and origin. The products are not only supplied in the province but also sold at many clean food stores, supermarkets or restaurants and kitchens in major cities.

For the Chu Hien Phuoc Rice Noodle Production, Trading and Consumption Cooperative (Chu town - supplying about 60 tons of noodles to the market each month), the application of advanced production processes is an important factor to improve the quality, productivity and value of products. Since 2022, with the State's support of 100 million VND, the Cooperative has invested more than 3 billion VND to equip a system of noodle coating machines with steam ovens and noodle dryers with electric ovens, the entire noodle making process is carried out in a closed chain. Currently, the Cooperative's products have been recognized as 3 and 4 star OCOP, in addition to domestic consumption, they also meet the conditions for export to many different markets.

Encourage deep processing

By the end of May this year, the whole province had 444 OCOP products with 3 stars or more; including 1 5-star product, 21 4-star products and 422 3-star products. The Department of Agriculture and Environment's assessment showed that after participating in the OCOP program, products had clearly changed in quality and design, more than 60% of subjects had an average revenue increase of over 15%/year.

Many OCOP products apply advanced processes and equipment in production and processing such as: ISO, HACCP, BNC, FBA, VietGAP, GlobalGAP,... to meet large production requirements and have direct export activities such as: VIFOCO Import-Export Joint Stock Company, Global Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company; Kim Ngan vinegar... Especially Luc Ngan litchi and Phuc Hoa early litchi products have been exported to markets requiring high quality.

Mr. Nguyen Van Luy, Head of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said that Bac Giang has formed many large-scale commodity production areas according to VietGAP standards (more than 16,600 hectares), lychee production areas meeting GlobalGAP standards (164 hectares), lychee meeting organic standards (10 hectares), longan meeting GlobalGAP standards 10 hectares and many growing areas meeting VietGAP standards such as: custard apple, orange, grapefruit, tea, vegetables of all kinds... These are favorable conditions for developing and improving the quality of OCOP products.

However, besides the achieved results, many products are still in the form of preliminary processing, with low added value. The capacity, qualifications and production and business capital of OCOP entities are still limited, so they do not have the conditions to invest in modern technology, and do not pay much attention to intellectual property issues, improving designs, packaging, and building product brands.

In the coming time, the agricultural sector will continue to implement support policies to invest in machinery, equipment, promote and trade products. Encourage investors to innovate and apply advanced science and technology in production, preliminary processing, preservation and processing of products to improve productivity, quality and meet market demand. Organize direction and support production according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic standards for key crops with strengths. Focus on training and coaching for OCOP product producers on safe production processes and advanced production standards suitable for each product type...

Support and guide entities to self-declare product quality according to current regulations; build and design product identity, logo, intellectual property and packaging, and uniform labels for each product group in accordance with regulations; use and update traceability label information, especially new types of environmentally friendly packaging, suitable for consumer tastes...
