The new Iskander-1000 missile
According to The EurAsian Times , Russia's Iskander ballistic missiles have posed a significant challenge to Ukrainian forces since the conflict began. These missiles become even more dangerous if their guidance systems are upgraded and their range extended.
According to Russian military bloggers and Ukrainian media, the Iskander missile, after being upgraded to extend its range to 1,000 km and upgrade its warhead, is expected to be named Iskander-1000.
According to the Ukrainian news agency Defense Express , the new Iskander-1000 missile has a target accuracy of only about 5 meters. Defense Express emphasizes that the upgraded warhead can use an automatic inertial guidance system, capable of correcting for satellite navigation, or utilize a radar-based guidance system that uses topographic maps of the target area during the final stage of flight.
The Iskander-1000 missile can be launched from the Iskander launcher. The new missile model has a structure similar to the 9M723 ballistic missile. However, the degree of similarity between this missile and previous Iskander variants remains unclear, and even the weight of the Iskander-1000 missile has not been disclosed.
Iskander-M version
The Iskander is a Russian tactical missile system, with the Iskander-M version equipped with a satellite guidance system.
The Iskander-M is one of Russia's most modern missile systems, capable of carrying various types of warheads, including nuclear warheads. This missile system is highly maneuverable and can penetrate current missile defense systems, making it a very effective offensive weapon.
The Iskander missile is 7.2 m long, 0.95 m in diameter, weighs 3.8 tons, has a 380 kg warhead, and can fly at an altitude of 50 km. Its range is designed to strike targets within a range of 50 to 500 km. The missile's guidance system has also been modified to suit a strong electronic warfare environment and increase accuracy when striking targets.
During nearly three years of fighting, Russia repeatedly fired Iskander-M missiles at high-value Ukrainian targets, including frontline command posts, armored vehicle depots, ammunition depots, and Patriot anti-aircraft missile batteries and HIMARS artillery vehicles.
The Iskander-M missile system can fire at two different targets within one minute. The Iskander-M missile weighs 3.8 tons and carries a 480kg fragmentation warhead. A unique feature of this missile is its ability to fly off course, making it very difficult to intercept, and the missile is guided throughout its flight.
Each Iskander-M missile launcher typically carries two missiles. The Iskander-M is highly effective in destroying fixed enemy military structures such as airfields, warehouses, and command centers.
