According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, speaking at a press conference, the WHO Director-General stated that RTS,S is the first vaccine to prevent malaria. He stressed that malaria remains one of the most deadly diseases in Africa. Nearly 500,000 children under the age of 5 on the continent die from malaria each year. The RTS,S vaccine has been provided to more than 1.6 million children in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi under a pilot program.

"I think it's really important to remember that almost every minute a child dies from malaria, and introducing a malaria vaccine as an additional tool in the toolbox to fight serious disease and prevent deaths is a really necessary step," she stressed.
