Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Vice Chairman of the Central Council of Theory, Head of the Department of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts; writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Writers' Association ; critic Nguyen Dang Diep, Chairman of the Council of Theory and Criticism, Vietnam Writers' Association chaired the conference.
In his opening speech, writer Nguyen Quang Thieu, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, said that the conference raised two very big issues. One is to “name” the important turning points and real achievements, and at the same time “name” the barriers that have hindered the development of Vietnamese literature over the past 50 years.
According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, Vietnamese literature from 1975 to now has gone through extremely important stages. The first stage is after 1975, the country was unified, the appearance, level, and portrait of Vietnamese literature have changed, including the literature of the northern and southern provinces and overseas literature.
The important period of Vietnamese literature after 1975 is the Renovation period. This period has many trends, schools, and new aesthetics of art in all genres, in literature, in poetry, in critical theory, in translation. Translated literature is an extremely important part, having a great impact on the creation of Vietnamese literature, contributing to the diversity of trends, structures, and genres in the creation of Vietnamese literature.
Notably, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu said that we are now entering a new era, the era of artificial intelligence and digital technology . There is already evidence of some works using AI to a certain extent. However, according to the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, when writers write with their own creativity, their own opinions, their own emotions, their own intelligence, that is the most important weapon to fight against the intervention of AI and robots in literary creation.
“If we let artificial intelligence replace writers, it means we have ended literature, ended literature in its essence,” poet Nguyen Quang Thieu shared.
The Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association also commented that after half a century since 1975, Vietnamese literature has not yet established its worthy position. The reality of Vietnam is full of fluctuations, mutations, changes and emotions, but we have not yet produced the works as desired. The portrait of Vietnamese literature is still unclear.
In the introduction to the conference, writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Vice President of the Vietnam Writers Association, said that the Vietnam Writers Association had organized two conferences summarizing Vietnamese literature after 1975 in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang and had received many comments and assessments from writers, poets, and researchers. In particular, the assessments of literature over the past 50 years were divided into two relatively different viewpoints.
In terms of humanity, opinions say that over the past 50 years, literature has done well its mission and duty. Literature has portrayed the situation of the nation and also the fate of human beings in the turbulent flow of historical development, even in peacetime. Literature has also courageously dissected the most burning issues of society, "patched up" post-war wounds, and created its own cultural features. On the contrary, there are very strict opinions that over the past 50 years, our literature has not done well its function in creating a humane and good spiritual life for society. It has not promptly rung the alarm bells about the falsehoods of society and people, as well as in terms of morality, ideals and dignity.
In terms of artistic merit, there are also generous opinions that the literature of the past 50 years has been truly rich, diverse, and even daring. Literature has created its own unique features compared to previous periods, and at the same time created a large group of authors with many works. Literature has also measured the depth of the soul of modern Vietnamese people. But there are also opinions that, in the past 50 years, literature has been mainly a general flow in the same direction. There are few diverse voices, few movements of searching in a drastic and thorough manner; there is a lack of valuable works of life, and even a lack of authors capable of bringing Vietnamese literature to the world and standing on par with the world.
At the conference, delegates had many frank discussions and opinions about achievements; suggesting solutions to develop Vietnamese literature. In particular, Professor Phong Le said that after 50 years, Vietnamese literature is waiting for a generational transition. According to Professor Phong Le, the main force in today's writing team must be the writing generation born before or after 1990, a little earlier in 1986 or a little later in 1995.
Critic Nguyen Hoai Nam focused on analyzing the achievements of Vietnamese writers living abroad, in which he affirmed that the literature of Vietnamese people and people of Vietnamese origin living abroad not only delves deeply into the issues of the past and Vietnamese traditions, but also opens up very widely to the issues of all nations and peoples in the era of integration and globalization. That part of literature deserves to be recognized and studied more specifically, in all its constituent aspects...
Summarizing the workshop, critical theorist Nguyen Dang Diep, Chairman of the Council of Criticism and Theory, Vietnam Writers Association, said that along with the papers sent to the Organizing Committee, there were 7 papers presented and 5 comments given at the workshop. Many comments stated that literature after 1975 has opened up new creative paths. The team of writers has made innovations in perception, thinking, and writing style. Many comments and discussions were in-depth on creative expertise and critical theory. There are still issues raised by the workshop but have not been discussed in depth, and need to continue to be discussed in the coming time...
