In the context of the country's reform and development, Dien Ban's position needs to be assessed and considered in order to enhance investment attraction and development.

In the context of the current national revival and the reintegration of Quang Nam and Da Nang provinces, shouldn't we have a more accurate understanding of this place name and clearly define a new development opportunity for Dien Ban?

A convergence of history and culture

The legacy of our predecessors in founding and developing the nation always demands that subsequent generations grasp and understand it. According to research, Dien Ban was a frontier region of the country during the Le Dynasty, a place of frequent power clashes between Dai Viet and Champa.

Throughout history, emperors have always marked the boundaries of this area. In the early 17th century, maps clearly showed Dien Ban district as belonging to Trieu Phong prefecture, Thuan Hoa province. In 1604, Duke Doan Quoc Nguyen Hoang elevated Dien Ban to a prefecture and transferred it to the Quang Nam garrison, with the garrison stationed in Thanh Chiem, ushering in a glorious period for the name Dien Ban.

Researcher Nguyen Phuoc Tuong raises the question: measurement data shows that Dien Ban - Thanh Chiem is 15 km from Hoi An and also 15 km from Da Nang later on. This figure suggests that the positioning of Dien Ban, creating a three-gate structure leaning against a slope to secure the land for the long term, raises the question of whether Dien Ban existed first before Hoi An and Da Nang were formed.

Nowadays, due to the stronger development of Hoi An and Da Nang, many people forget the former position of Dien Ban, thinking that this position was obtained "thanks" to the two provincial capitals, while the historical development is the opposite.

During the process of establishing administrative control over the Quang region, the dynasties designated Dien Ban as a major political and military stronghold north of the Thu Bon River; and with the river branch forming a strategic defensive position and fostering economic development in this area, Dien Ban was once a gathering place for many talented people and resources.

Opening up economic opportunities?

It is noteworthy that, in the current context, Dien Ban is being recognized as the "urban hub of northern Quang Nam," both in terms of administrative planning and the investment and business mindset of enterprises and economic organizations.

The convergence of history and culture allows Dien Ban to aim for higher-quality urban development standards and connect with Da Nang and Hoi An to form an urban cluster.

Architect Truong Van Quang (Institute of Urban and Rural Planning) once analyzed that, with its location at the northern gateway of Quang Nam, intersecting with the two urban clusters of Hoi An and Da Nang, and already having a planned system of concentrated industrial zones, connecting with a system of craft villages and cultural heritage destinations, Dien Ban is essentially a destination with many strategic advantages, capable of attracting strong investment in industry, services and tourism.

The strategic location of this area makes it easy to create important trade routes, running from Da Nang southward, connecting with the western region of Quang Nam, and serving as a nucleus of the cluster of urban centers in the Central Vietnam key economic zone (Da Nang - Chan May - Hoi An - Dien Nam Dien Ngoc).

According to consultants, if Da Nang is merged with Quang Nam, Dien Ban's position becomes even more noteworthy. This is because it can both connect with Da Nang, leveraging the advantages of a major urban center to form a chain of core urban centers in the south, effectively attracting strong investment in supporting industries; and it can also connect with the ancient city of Hoi An, exploiting its cultural heritage to create a unique tourism advantage.

This explains why, in a very short time, when administrative planning adjustments were announced, Dien Ban quickly became a hot spot attracting investment in urban infrastructure and real estate. The numerous new urban projects, residential clusters, and high-tech zones being developed and implemented vigorously in the area is a very concrete example.

Looking back at the previous planning of Quang Nam province, Dien Ban was identified as a growth point for industrial and commercial urban areas, encompassing 15 out of 60 communes in eastern Quang Nam. It had the potential to become a center for industry, commerce, tourism, and services in northern Quang Nam. After the merger, together with Da Nang and Hoi An, Dien Ban will create a new urban core, developing a vast area and providing a positive contrast to the southern part of Quang Nam, which is Tam Ky combined with Nui Thanh.

The city of Dien Ban will thus further demonstrate its "three-pronged approach": to the north, Da Nang is the center of commerce, finance, and services; to the east, Hoi An is the center of tourism, culture, and society; and it itself is a region for supporting industries, a scenic urban area for comprehensive events, and the formation of high-quality residential areas linked to traditional craft villages…

A whole development picture will unfold from Dien Ban, forming a dynamic network for the development of the Da Nang - Dien Ban - Hoi An region, including a coastal tourism infrastructure strip and a system of central urban areas connected with high-tech industrial zones.

Historically, Dien Ban holds a significant position in the southern region, and could this land once again be experiencing a new era of opportunity?
