Ho Chi Minh City defender Vu Van Thanh scored two goals, helping Hanoi Police defeat hosts Ho Chi Minh City 5-3 in Round 8 of the V-League 2023 on the evening of May 21st.
Before the match at Thong Nhat Stadium, Ho Chi Minh City was the team that conceded the most goals (14), while Hanoi FC scored the most goals (14) over seven rounds. And what happened accurately reflected the characteristics of the two teams at present.
In the 2nd minute, Ho Chi Minh City's net was shaken after Jesus Jhon Cley tapped in a close-range shot from a cross by Vu Van Thanh on the right wing. Five minutes later, from a seemingly harmless clearance by Huynh Tan Sinh, the ball reached Jhon Cley's feet inside the penalty area, causing Jonathan Campbell to commit a foul. From the penalty spot, Van Thanh decisively shot into the bottom left corner, doubling CAHN's lead.

From this point on, the two teams treated the audience to an exciting back-and-forth match. In the 20th minute, the trio of Daniel Green, Victor Mansaray, and Hoang Vu Samson combined effectively. Inside the penalty area, Mansaray released the ball for Samson to fire a low shot, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
In the 26th minute, the Ho Chi Minh City defense made another mistake, failing to clear the ball decisively, allowing Jhon Cley to take a shot that forced Thanh Thắng to make a difficult save. Văn Thanh then pounced on the rebound to complete his brace, increasing the score to 3-1.
But the home team continued to press forward. From a run down the right wing and a cross into the penalty area by Le Cao Hoai An, Mansaray scored from close range to reduce the deficit to one goal. However, before the first half ended, the visitors extended their lead to 4-2. Midfielder Trong Long capitalized on the space, unleashing a powerful long-range shot from about 22 meters. Having previously played for Ho Chi Minh City FC, Trong Long did not celebrate.

In the second half, CAHN deliberately slowed down the pace, while TP HCM refused to give up. In the 65th minute, Daniel Green skillfully dribbled down the left wing, beating Bui Tien Dung. Facing goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang, he passed the ball across to Samson, causing Tan Sinh to score an own goal while retreating to clear the ball.
The 3-4 scoreline seemed to encourage Ho Chi Minh City to play better and try to turn the tide. However, the carelessness of the home team's defense rendered the efforts of their foreign attacking trio meaningless. In the 71st minute, Doan Van Hau's cross from the wing wasn't dangerous, but center-back Campbell missed the clearance, giving Tran Van Trung the opportunity to volley the ball in with his left foot, scoring the goal that sealed the 5-3 victory.
This result gives CAHN their third consecutive win and extends their unbeaten streak in V-League 2023 to five matches. They climbed to second place with 14 points, level with Hanoi FC but with a better goal difference (+9 compared to +6), and four points behind league leaders Thanh Hoa .
Ho Chi Minh City FC remains in 13th place with four points, one point ahead of bottom-placed Da Nang and having played one more match. Coach Vu Tien Thanh's team has not won in four consecutive matches and has not kept a clean sheet in any game since the start of the season.
