The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has confirmed that Nguyen Van Toan suffered a torn knee ligament. The Nam Dinh FC striker will be out for at least three weeks. Van Toan will no longer have a chance to participate in the 2024 AFF Cup, even if the Vietnamese national team reaches the final of the tournament.

In the 61st minute, after receiving a pass from Quang Hai, Van Toan made a speedy run, but player number 19 Oakkar Naing tackled him aggressively. This tackle caused the Vietnamese striker to fall to the ground and be unable to continue playing, requiring assistance from the medical team. The Nam Dinh striker broke down in tears, clearly showing his pain. He left the field on a stretcher and was replaced by Tien Linh for the remainder of the match.

The 2024 AFF Cup was a tournament where Nguyen Van Toan left a strong impression. In the first three matches, he came on as a substitute but always made a difference for the Vietnamese national team. The striker, born in 1996, scored in the match against Laos.

With Nguyen Xuan Son on the field, Van Toan was immediately included in the starting lineup because the two understood each other from their time playing together at Nam Dinh Club.

Van Toan responded after the match: “ Everyone has seen how well Nguyen Xuan Son played. When playing for the national team, I feel a little unfamiliar but very happy. There is no difference between the national team and the club; I understand Nguyen Xuan Son very well .”

However, coach Kim Sang-sik was forced to find alternative personnel options because Van Toan was out for the rest of the tournament. Tuan Hai, Vi Hao, and Tien Linh emerged as quality choices. In the match against Myanmar, Tien Linh came on in the 61st minute and played very well with Nguyen Xuan Son. He scored one goal from a pass by Xuan Son and provided an assist for his teammate to score.

In the semi-finals, the Vietnamese team played away in the first leg against Singapore. Coach Kim Sang-sik's team played the second leg at home.
