The organizers of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 tournament decided to use VAR technology in the final match between U23 Vietnam and U23 Indonesia, to support the referee team in the match that is predicted to be very tense.

VAR technology was not used at the beginning of the tournament, and some matches were controversial, even involving refereeing incidents. Specifically, in the semi-final match between U23 Vietnam and U23 Philippines on the evening of July 25, Malaysian referee Muhammad Usaid Jamal mistakenly gave a red card to a player from the Philippines team. Because VAR was not used in the tournament, the referee's decision remained unchanged.

Previously, President of the Indonesian Football Federation, Mr. Erick Thohir, had warnings for coach Kim Sang Sik's team that U23 Indonesia would play tough at "the necessary level".

"This is the second time U23 Indonesia meets U23 Vietnam in the final of the U23 Southeast Asia. But I believe this time will be different, if the opponent plays tough, we will also play tough," said the head of the Indonesian Football Federation.

On the U23 Vietnam side, coach Kim Sang Sik affirmed that he and his players have the best preparation and are confident in overcoming the pressure at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to win and defend the championship.

The final match of U23 Southeast Asia 2025 between U23 Vietnam vs U23 Indonesia will kick off at 8:00 p.m. on July 29.
