Many feudal doctors were honored by Hai Phong.

From ancient times to the present, when talking about "doctoral village", almost everyone mentions Mo Trach village (in Tan Hong commune, Binh Giang district, Hai Duong province), which is the most famous village in the country, with 36 doctors in the feudal examinations. However, few people know that in Hai Phong there is also a "doctoral village", which is still recorded in history books today, that is Le Xa village (Tu Son commune, Kien Thuy district).

According to the elders in Le Xa village, long ago, when they first reclaimed the land and established the hamlet, the people named this land Huong Duong hamlet, wishing their homeland to be like a flower that always turns towards the sun and can withstand the storms of the ocean.

Because it is an ancient village, established early, the village institutions in Le Xa village are quite tight. The people of Le Xa, like many villages across Vietnam, only make a living by growing rice and raising silkworms. Studying to become talented, to advance with your own hands and brains, there is absolutely no miracle or genealogy to explain the education in this land. Although life is still difficult, the people of Le Xa village in particular and Tu Son commune in general still create all conditions for their children to study properly with the concept "a bushel of gold is not worth a bag of letters".

Therefore, during the feudal period, Tu Son commune became a famous land of mandarins, especially Le Xa village. In just 69 years, from 1469 to 1538, Le Xa village had 7 people passing the doctoral exam. During the feudal period, any village or commune only needed one person to pass the doctoral exam, and its reputation would spread far and wide. Therefore, Le Xa village was widely known as the "village of doctors".

The founder of the "doctoral village" Le Xa was Mr. Nguyen Nhan Nghiem, who passed the Third Class Doctorate exam at the age of 29 in the Ky Suu year (1469) under the reign of King Le Thanh Tong and held the position of Do Cap Su Trung Bo Cong.

In the Giap Thin year (1484) examination, Mr. Bui Pho, who was only 25 years old at the time, passed the Hoang Giap exam. In 1495, King Le Thanh Tong established the Tao Dan Association and invited him to participate. 5 poems by Mr. Bui Pho were included in the Toan Viet Thi Luc anthology by Le Quy Don.

Mr. Tran Ba ​​Luong passed the Third Class Doctorate in the year of Ky Mui (1499) under King Le Hien Tong. When he was appointed as Deputy Chief Ambassador to China, he presented a petition to the Ming King and was included by Phan Huy Chu in the book Lich Trieu Hien Chuong Loai Chu .

In the examination year of Nham Tuat (1502), during the reign of King Le Hien Tong, Mr. Pham Gia Mo passed the third class of doctoral exam and became an official with the position of Minister of Rites.

Mr. Le Thoi Bat passed the Second Class Doctorate exam in the year of Tan Mui (1511) under King Le Tuong Duc, then became an official for the Mac dynasty with the position of Minister, title of Van Uyen Marquis.

Notably, in the Mau Tuat examination (1538), under the reign of King Mac Thai Tong, Le Xa village had two people who passed the Third Class Doctorate exam, Mr. Hoang Thuyen and Mr. Nguyen Hue Trach.

To honor the studious spirit as well as the contributions of the doctors of Le Xa village to the country, today, in Hai Phong city, some doctors such as Bui Pho, Tran Ba ​​Luong, Pham Gia Mo have had streets and roads named after them by the city government.

Talking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Dong Duy Cuong, Chairman of Tu Son Commune People's Committee said that in addition to 7 doctors who passed the feudal examination in Le Xa village, in Nai Son village, there were also 2 doctors who passed the same examination in Dinh Suu year (1757), namely Mr. Bui Dinh Du and Nguyen Quang Bieu, bringing the total number of doctors who passed the feudal examination in the whole Tu Son commune to 9 people.

Preserving the tradition of learning

According to Mr. Dong Duy Cuong, in order to contribute to preserving and continuing the precious tradition of studiousness of Le Xa village in particular and Tu Son commune in general, in recent times, representatives of local authorities have regularly coordinated with organizations and representatives of villages to organize "unexpected home visits" in the evening to the homes of students with poor academic performance to check on their studies and encourage their families and children.

In addition, Tu Son commune also mobilized social resources to award scholarships and bicycles to disadvantaged students who have overcome difficulties to excel in their studies. At the same time, timely rewards were given to students who achieved high and outstanding results in their studies.

Mr. Nguyen Van Anh, Head of Le Xa Cultural Village, said that the tradition of studiousness has permeated the blood of the people of Le Xa Village. Up to now, many families, despite their difficult circumstances, still save up the best things in the hope that their children will study well and become successful.

Among them, we can mention the family of Mr. Dang Van Truong. Mr. Truong himself works as a security guard, his wife stays home to grow vegetables and raise chickens, but still tries to raise 2 children to go to university. Or Mr. Nguyen Van Biem (deceased) used to catch crabs and snails with his wife to raise 2 children to finish university.

Wish to have a solemn place to worship the doctors

"I heard from the elders that in the past, the village had a very large communal house, and the doctors were worshiped here by the villagers. However, during the resistance war against the French, the scorched earth policy was implemented, and the communal house was demolished and has not been restored to this day," Mr. Anh said sadly.

Because Le Xa communal house has not been rebuilt, the place of worship of the village's tutelary god, doctors and martyrs is being temporarily worshiped in the grounds of the cultural house.

Since the village communal house no longer exists, the village tutelary god, 7 feudal doctors, and more than 60 martyrs are currently being temporarily worshiped at the Le Xa Cultural House built in the grounds of the former village communal house. Faced with this situation, the villagers and children far from home cannot help but feel sad.

Mr. Nguyen Van Anh shared that for many years, the issue of rebuilding the village communal house has been raised at many village meetings. Everyone wants to join hands to contribute labor and money to build a place to worship the village's tutelary god, doctors, and heroic martyrs.

Mr. Nguyen Van Anh is sad that up to now, Le Xa communal house has not been able to be rebuilt.

Regarding the desire to rebuild the communal house of the Le Xa villagers, Mr. Dong Duy Cuong informed that the People's Committee of Tu Son commune has proposed the People's Committee of Kien Thuy district to include in the planning 2,000 m2 in the old Le Xa communal house area, now part of the Le Xa Cultural House campus, to mobilize socialized capital to build a new communal house. When completed, this will be a "red address" to educate the tradition of patriotism, studiousness, a point of community connection, especially for children far from home when returning to their homeland to see again the familiar scene of "banyan tree, ferry, communal house yard".
