According to the Vietnam Expressway Investment and Development Corporation (VEC), in the first nine months of 2023, the expressways managed and operated by VEC safely served more than 45.3 million vehicles, an increase of 12.41% compared to the same period in 2022.

VEC plans to increase tolls on four expressways under its management in 2024.

Specifically, the Cau Gie - Ninh Binh expressway had the highest traffic volume with 15.8 million vehicles, but the lowest growth rate among the four routes, only 8.5% compared to the same period in 2022.

Ranking second in terms of traffic volume is the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway with 15.4 million vehicles, a 9.65% increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway experienced impressive growth in the first nine months of this year, the highest among VEC's four expressways at 21.43% compared to the same period in 2023. However, its traffic volume ranked only third (12.3 million vehicles).

The Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway continues to hold the second position in terms of growth rate, but the traffic volume on the route remains the lowest among the four expressways (only 1.8 million vehicles).

The official operation of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system on four expressways by VEC has proven effective. However, according to VEC representatives, in reality, the operating procedures and standards of the ETC system and the operating procedures and standards of the old vehicle weight control system are not synchronized, leading to some difficulties and obstacles in controlling vehicle weight.

To address this, the competent state management agency is finalizing and issuing guidelines on the organizational model and technical standards for the vehicle weight inspection system when operating the ETC toll collection system. In the meantime, VEC has instructed its operating units to add directional signs; integrate the weighing system with the ETC toll collection system; and enhance the application of appropriate vehicle weight inspection technology.

Notably, VEC representatives also stated that, according to the schedule of periodic fee increases every 3 years based on Decision No. 2323/QD-BGTVT of 2021 by the Minister of Transport, VEC is developing a plan to increase road service fees for 4 expressway projects in 2024 to ensure financial viability and debt repayment capacity.

Most recently, VEC adjusted the service fees for two vehicle groups: Type 4 (trucks with a load capacity from 10 tons to under 18 tons; 20-foot container trucks) and Type 5 (trucks with a load capacity of 18 tons or more; 40-foot container trucks) on the Cau Gie - Ninh Binh and Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressways. The adjustment took effect at 0:00 on September 1st.
