"FIFA assesses that Vietnamese referees grasp VAR technology and procedures quite quickly. We hope that 18 referees will meet FIFA's requirements," said Mr. Tran Anh Tu - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), Vice President of Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
There are 18 Vietnamese referees who have completed the VAR practical training course. The referees have met FIFA's requirements relatively well. VPF and VFF plan to test VAR in some matches at the end of the 2023 season, including the National Cup final.
"FIFA recommends that we should not apply VAR to matches that are too difficult, because it will easily cause problems. The National Cup final may be the most difficult match for referees to operate VAR ," VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu shared about the plan to bring VAR to professional tournaments.
VAR is expected to be applied at the end of this season.
All the final equipment to operate VAR technology has been imported and installed on the mobile VAR vehicle. The VAR vehicle in Vietnam is a 16-seat passenger vehicle, converted by removing all the seats and installing other equipment and seats to suit the usage function.
"VPF has imported 2 VAR vehicles. FIFA approved our 2 VAR vehicles after meeting the set standards. For these 2 vehicles to operate, we must register them because they are converted vehicles. With this process, we hope that by the end of the 2023 season, VAR will begin to be put into use," Mr. Tran Anh Tu added.
According to VPF Chairman Tran Anh Tu, VAR can be tested in some less important matches at the end of the 2023 season. From the 2023/24 season, V-League will have VAR.
Currently, V-League 2023 is entering the final rounds of phase one. Thanh Hoa Club, Hanoi Police Club and Hanoi Club have secured their places in the championship group in the next phase. Meanwhile, Binh Duong Club, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang will have to compete in the relegation group. The championship group includes the top 8 teams, the remaining 6 teams are in the relegation group.
