The sweet taste of brackish water shrimp

In the warm sunshine of the Spring of 2026 (Year of the Horse), across the key brackish water shrimp farming areas of Can Tho City, the sound of oxygen pumps running continuously fills the ponds. In the distance, some ponds are being harvested, and the sounds of laughter and conversation echo throughout the area. Last year, the whole country, and the Mekong Delta region in particular, suffered greatly from storms and heavy rains, causing many disadvantages for aquaculture. However, overcoming all obstacles, farmers in this region achieved great success.

Leaders of the Can Tho City Party Committee conducted a field survey of shrimp farming at a household in Tran De commune, Can Tho City.

Billionaires celebrate the Lunar New Year.

As a well-known shrimp farmer in the Buoi Port area, Khanh Hoa ward, Mr. Tang Van Xua continues to reap abundant harvests this year with his high-tech shrimp farming methods (shrimp farming in ponds lined with tarpaulin, automatic feeding equipment, and a pond system built with multiple ponds (settling ponds, filtration ponds, waste storage ponds, etc., to supplement one main pond)).

Taking reporters on a tour of his shrimp ponds, Mr. Xua said that last year's weather was unfavorable and extreme, causing his family several worries, but with decades of experience in brackish water shrimp farming, his family had a successful shrimp harvest. According to Mr. Xua, to minimize risks in shrimp farming, before stocking, he meticulously prepares the ponds by drying them, spreading lime around them, and "preparing the water before raising the shrimp"; especially, he applies high technology to shrimp farming using lined ponds and applies a 2 or 3-stage farming method.

Mr. Xua shared that his family owns a total area of 8 hectares, with 14 ponds. In the first crop of 2025, they raised whiteleg shrimp, harvesting 45 tons, and after deducting expenses, he earned a profit of 1.3 billion VND.

In the second shrimp farming season, there were many concerns about the weather. Because during this season, continuous rain and storms caused the shrimp to contract white feces disease and grow slowly, but thanks to applying farming techniques recommended by experts, combined with feeding the shrimp at the right time, the shrimp "overcame the storms" and brought complete joy to the family.

Sitting next to Mr. Xua and listening to his story, Mrs. Lam Thi En, his wife, added up the investment amounts from the past two shrimp farming seasons. She smiled and said that the two shrimp farming seasons yielded a profit of over 2 billion VND, and this year the family will have a warm and joyful Tet holiday.

Meanwhile, Huynh Khanh Luong, a farmer and successful businessman at the central level, residing in Nha Tho hamlet, Tran De commune, is also celebrating Tet with billions of dong.

His journey with brackish water shrimp farming spans over 30 years. Initially, he raised shrimp in earthen ponds using extensive farming methods, then switched to semi-industrial farming, but with low productivity. In 2013, he switched to shrimp farming in ponds lined with tarpaulin, and since then, productivity has gradually increased.

Mr. Khanh Luong shared: “Last year, I raised shrimp for two seasons on a total area of 10 hectares, raising both shrimp and fish. This included two 700m² ponds for shrimp farming and two 2,000m² ponds lined with tarpaulin for tiger shrimp farming. The unpredictable weather really worried my family, but I established a suitable farming process, arranging everything seamlessly from the rearing ponds - settling ponds - water storage ponds - waste disposal ponds, and especially the waste treatment system. As a result, the shrimp grew quickly, were healthy, and yielded high productivity.”
From the two shrimp harvests last year, Mr. Luong earned a profit of 1.5 billion VND.

Mr. Huynh Khanh Luong from Tran De commune, Can Tho city, shared that although the weather in 2025 was unfavorable for brackish water shrimp farming, the farming season was successful thanks to the application of high technology.

"Giving a boost" to brackish water shrimp farming.

According to assessments by relevant authorities, in 2025, Can Tho City's aquaculture sector achieved positive results, basically completing and exceeding the assigned plan targets. Specifically, the area for aquaculture reached 52,490/51,000 hectares as planned, and the production of 229,700 tons met and exceeded the city's target.

According to Mr. Do Van Thua, Deputy Head of the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Department of Can Tho City, during the 2025 brackish water shrimp farming season, the unit regularly conducted environmental monitoring in key shrimp farming areas to collect and measure 7,796 samples on-site for analysis. This allowed them to promptly advise farmers on the optimal time to take water for shrimp farming and warn of potential diseases that could affect shrimp farming.

The unit also organized 5 seminars on the management and prevention of diseases in brackish water shrimp farming; implemented 20 VietGAP shrimp farming demonstration models; organized 4 field workshops on VietGAP shrimp farming models; and organized 36 technical training courses on applying effective brackish water shrimp farming processes and environmental protection in aquaculture.

To support brackish water shrimp farming in 2026, Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said that in addition to improving farmers' care skills, enhancing the quality of shrimp fry, and selecting breeds with disease resistance and good adaptability to environmental changes, the Department will implement shrimp farming in a direction that applies advanced science and technology, develops sustainably, and increases added value.

The area for brackish water shrimp farming in Can Tho City is estimated at over 51,000 hectares annually.

Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh emphasized: "Equally important is organizing farmers to apply science and technology and digital transformation in pond management through environmental monitoring systems, automated feeding, and recirculating aquaculture models with minimal water changes to reduce costs and disease risks, so that brackish water shrimp farming remains a source of joy for households in specialized farming areas."

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in addition to efficient production, brackish water shrimp farming must develop along the value chain from farming and processing to consumption, strengthening linkages between farmers and businesses, promoting deep processing, building brands, and ensuring traceability to meet export market requirements. It is necessary to standardize production processes according to domestic and international standards; and to have policies supporting capital, infrastructure, and logistics to create a crucial foundation for the stable development of the brackish water shrimp industry, enhance competitiveness, and make a sustainable contribution to Vietnam's fisheries economy in general, and economic growth for Can Tho City in particular.
