Why can dehydration on hot days cause blood clots?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên24/05/2023

Dehydration is a condition in which the amount of water and minerals such as potassium and sodium in the body is severely reduced below the balance. In healthy people, under normal conditions, the body will excrete water through sweat, tears, breath, urine and feces. This amount of water is soon replenished by drinking or eating foods containing water, according to the Daily Express (UK).

Severe dehydration increases the risk of blood clots forming in the brain.

For people who are sick, diarrhea and vomiting are symptoms that can easily cause the body to become dehydrated. Children and people over 60 years old are at high risk of dehydration.

Common symptoms of dehydration include thirst, decreased urination, dry skin, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, increased heart rate, and sunken cheeks and eyes. In addition, medical experts warn that severe dehydration can also make the body susceptible to rare neurological conditions related to overheating, such as cerebral venous thrombosis. The disease causes blood clots to form in the main veins of the brain.

Studies show that severe dehydration increases the concentration of red blood cells, causing them to clump together with platelets. This results in the formation of a blood clot. In many cases, the clot dissolves before it can cause damage to the brain. However, in some cases, the clot does not dissolve and causes a stroke, leading to a brain hemorrhage.

At that time, blood circulation to the brain will be interrupted. Brain tissue will be damaged and die due to not receiving enough oxygen from the blood. If the patient is not treated promptly, it will have serious consequences such as paralysis or even death.

To prevent the risk of blood clots due to dehydration, people need to make sure their bodies are well hydrated. Drink water whenever you feel thirsty. In particular, the body needs to replenish more water when sweating a lot due to being in the sun, exercising or moving a lot.

Eating foods that contain a lot of water, such as fruit, is also an effective way to replenish water. People with illnesses such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever should drink plenty of water and stay away from alcohol and foods high in caffeine, such as tea and coffee, according to the Daily Express .
