Why do many airlines remove seats 13, 14, 17?

Sharp-eyed passengers may notice that on many planes, the seat numbers jump from row 12 to row 14 or from row 16 to row 18. Because the numbers 13 and 17 are considered unlucky in some countries, airlines do not want to include them in the seat rows on the plane.

"I have never seen a row 13 on a Ryan Air plane"

The unlucky number 13 is known by many to have a number of negative connotations, including Judas, who betrayed Jesus, and was the 13th disciple.

Air France, Iberia and Ryanair (UK) are among the airlines that do not have row 13. A Ryanair spokesperson confirmed that it is an "American manufacturing tradition".

Germany's Lufthansa is the only airline that doesn't have rows 13 and 17.

"In some cultures, the number 13 is considered unlucky. That's why there is no row 13 on the plane, because we respect our customers. So no one thinks the number 13 is unlucky but has to sit in that row. The number 17 is considered unlucky because it is considered the Roman numeral XVII, its anagram VIXI means roughly 'my life is over' in Latin," a representative of the airline told The Sun.

"Why isn't there row 17 on Lufthansa?"

“In some countries, such as Italy and Brazil, the typical unlucky number is 17 rather than 13. As Lufthansa welcomes a wide range of international passengers, we try to take into account as many specific cultural beliefs as possible,” Lufthansa said.

That's not the only unlucky number left out, in addition to not having a 13, United Airlines also doesn't have a 14 because in Chinese 14 sounds like "will die."

It's not just airlines that avoid the number 13 — some hotels and cruise ships don't have a 13th deck or floor, either.
