On the evening of May 24 and early this morning, May 25, Hanoi and the North suddenly felt cold and cool even though it was already summer. This morning, temperatures in Bac Kan , Lang Son, Cao Bang, Hoa Binh... were only 19-20 degrees Celsius in some places, while in Hanoi, it was 22-23 degrees Celsius. Scattered rain throughout the afternoon and last night made the air humid and cold and cool.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and meteorological experts, the cause is a cool air mass (weak cold air) but eastward from mainland China that has been flowing into the North since May 24. This air mass does not cause strong winds, but combined with high humidity and scattered rain all day, it causes the temperature to drop sharply so that the highest temperature during the day is only about 25-26 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, AccuWeather (USA) said that Hanoi's weather on May 25 and 26 will be cloudy with light rain, and temperatures will remain at 22-26 degrees Celsius. Climate models such as GFS (USA) and ECMWF (EU) also forecast weak easterly winds and thick humidity covering the Northern Delta region.
Meteorological agencies in Japan and China predict that the weak cold air mass will persist at least until May 28 and 29, then give way to a low-pressure trough that will bring typical summer rain.
Explaining the phenomenon of cold air being more active until summer, when many places have cicadas chirping, weather experts say that the La Nina phenomenon is showing signs of returning at a weak intensity, combined with subtropical high pressure and East wind disturbances, also contributing to creating the current unseasonal cold and rainy weather in the North and North Central regions.
The “summer cold” climate pattern used to occur sporadically, but has recently become more common and more extreme. This is considered a clear manifestation of global climate change: the weather is increasingly unpredictable, the temperature range is large, the timing of the seasons is disrupted, and hot and cold patterns appear without traditional rules.
