Localities with high English scores are still mainly concentrated in big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh Phuc, Hai Phong. Localities with the lowest English scores are Ha Giang , Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Son La, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Dak Nong...
Many teachers believe that the English score distribution shows a clear difference between regions, between urban and rural areas, remote areas as well as between candidates using English for university admission and using English only for high school graduation. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, an English teacher at Hoang Mai High School (Nghe An), among the high school graduation exam subjects, English is a special subject, the teaching and learning of English is oriented towards developing and assessing capacity, enhancing speaking and writing skills, encouraging communication while the current exam is limited to testing vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. In addition, socio-economic conditions in many areas of the country are still limited; parents' and students' awareness of the importance of English as well as the economic conditions of families and localities are also uneven. In addition, many students in rural areas and areas with difficult economic conditions do not have access to English from an early age and only start studying it systematically when they are in secondary school or even high school, so the quality of this subject is limited.
Sharing more with CAND Newspaper reporters about the English score distribution, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen, former Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education, Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, said that this year's English score distribution accurately reflects the current situation of English learning in Vietnam.
To improve the quality of English, according to Mr. Khuyen, efforts are needed from many sides, first of all, narrowing the gap between regions, raising income as well as the level of education so that people have enough conditions to pay attention and invest in learning foreign languages in general, English in particular; continuing to improve the quality of teaching and learning foreign languages in schools; and implementing well the classification of students after secondary school.
The benchmark scores of some admission combinations will increase.
In group A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), the average score this year is 20.9 (in 2023 it is 20.77), the median score is 21.3 (in 2023 it is 21.15). Group A01 (Math, Foreign Language, Physics), the average score is 20.47 (in 2023 it is 20.27), the median score is 20.75 (in 2023 it is 20.45). Group B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology), the average score is 20.53 (in 2023 it is 20.06), the median score is 20.75 (in 2023 it is 20.85). Group C00 (Literature, History, Geography), average score is 20.95 (in 2023 is 18.97), median score is 21.25 (in 2023 is 19). Group D01 (Math, Foreign Language, Literature), average score is 19.49 (in 2023 is 18.89), median score is 19.6 (in 2023 is 19.05).
Notably, although this year the whole country had 10,878 exams with a score of 10, in which Civic Education, History, Geography and Chemistry led in the number of 10 points, in all exam groups, no candidate scored 30 points. The top students of Block A and Block A1 this year both scored 29.6 points; the top students of Block B scored 29.55 points; the top students of Block C scored 29.75 points and the top students of Block D scored 28.75 points, while in 2023, the top students of Block A1 and Block B both scored 30 points.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the University Council of the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that the score distribution of subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, especially Chemistry and Geography with a score of 10 is higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is predicted that the standard scores of the combinations A00, A01, B00, C00, D01 will increase.
